About Peak District
Pulling up to the cottage, I was gobsmacked by how perfectly it blended into its surroundings – a cosy stone-built gem nestled in a quiet hamlet, with rolling hills unfolding like a postcard you didn’t know you needed. No grand entrance, just a wooden gate creaking open to reveal a private patio already begging for a cuppa. Inside, it was all exposed beams, a crackling wood burner (logs stacked ready, bless the hosts), and a kitchen that screamed ‘whip up a fry-up here’. First impressions? Pure bliss. Dropping my bags, I cracked open the window, and the air hit me – that crisp, peaty Peak District scent, laced with heather and damp earth. I’d arrived mid-afternoon, and with three days ahead, I figured I’d unpack later. Nah, this place was made for wandering. Keen to shake off the drive, I grabbed my boots and headed out on a whim, no map, just following a faint footpath snaking behind the cottage. That’s the magic of The Retreat – it’s positioned like a launchpad for those accidental discoveries, away from the coach-party crowds at places like Mam Tor. Within minutes, I’d stumbled upon a hidden gem: a babbling brook tucked in a wooded dell, no bigger than a garden stream but alive with the chatter of dippers bobbing for insects. I perched on a mossy rock, boots dangling in the water, feeling like I’d gatecrashed a secret world. Who needs signposted trails when getting lost leads to this? Emboldened, I pushed on up a barely-there path through bracken, the kind that locals probably use for dog walks but tourists overlook. Round a bend, and there it was – an old packhorse bridge, arched gracefully over a peaty stream, half-swallowed by ferns and overlooked by a sheep-nibbled hillside. No plaques, no Instagram hordes; just me, the wind whistling through the stones, and a profound quiet that made city life feel like a distant dream. I sat there with a flask of tea from the cottage, chuckling at how I’d nearly driven into a ditch for this. Light humour in the hills, eh? As the sun dipped low, painting the moors gold, I wandered back, unearthing another off-the-beaten-path delight: a wildflower meadow bursting with late-summer harebells and knapweed, right on the edge of the hamlet. Butterflies danced about like they owned the place. It got me reflecting gently – in the rush of everyday, we chase the big views, the beauty spots on every app. But here, at The Retreat, it’s the stumbles, the forgotten corners within a stone’s throw, that recharge the soul. First day in, and I was already hooked on the pleasures of proper getting-lost therapy. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s mishaps bring. |
