About Peak District
Pulling up to the lodge just after lunch on that first Friday, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in this peaceful spot near Hulme End, it's the sort of place that screams "relaxed family getaway" without trying too hard. The Premier Lodge is a cosy stone-built beauty, all low-beamed ceilings and that welcoming glow from the windows. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the boys were straight off racing around the garden like feral puppies. First impressions? Spot on. It's got that perfect Peak District charm—surrounded by rolling hills and those lush dales that make you breathe deeper just looking at 'em. No grand mansion, mind, just a homely two-bedroom setup with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire later, and French doors opening onto a patio that overlooks the valley. I could already imagine lazy mornings with tea in hand, watching the mist lift. We let ourselves in with the key safe code (smooth as, no faffing about), and the place wrapped us up like a warm hug. Fresh linen on the beds, a welcome pack with local biscuits and milk in the fridge—proper thoughtful touches. The kitchen was kitted out nicely, with everything you'd need for whipping up beans on toast or, in my case, a heroic attempt at spag bol later. The living area? Compact but cracking, with a telly for rainy days (though we were praying for sun) and board games stacked on a shelf. The lads claimed the bunk room immediately, bouncing on the beds and declaring it "the best ever." I caught my reflection in the mirror—windswept hair, daft grin—and had a quiet moment thinking, blimey, when did we last do something this simple? Work's been mad, and here's us, dropping everything for three days of lodge life chaos. Felt like a reset button. Stepping outside for that all-important first wander, we were hit by the magic of it all. Just a stone's throw from the Manifold Track, that old railway path turned walking trail—flat enough for the kids, with the River Dove babbling alongside. We ambled a mile or so towards Wetton Mill, the boys splashing in shallow pools and me pretending not to notice the muddy trainers. Light-hearted giggles all round when one slipped on a wet stone, emerging like a drowned rat but laughing his head off. Back at the lodge by tea time, we cracked open a picnic from the car (cheesy pasties from Ashbourne, naturally) on the patio. The sun dipped behind the hills, painting everything golden, and we just sat there, knackered but content. No itinerary, no rush—just the simple pleasure of being together in this pocket of Peak District paradise. That first afternoon set the tone: a bit of disorder with the unpacking (socks in the fridge, whoops), but the lodge's easy vibe smoothed it all out. As we fired up the stove that evening, flames crackling and the kettle on, I reflected gently on how these unhurried spots remind you life's not about ticking boxes. Hulme End Premier Lodge nailed it—our perfect base for ditching the daily grind and soaking up the dales' quiet joys. Can't wait for day two. |
