About Dovestone Secluded Luxury Lodges (Sleeps 6) Pets Welcome.
Greenfield is one of seven villages in the Saddleworth area, amid 18,000 acres of Pennine moorland, fields and valleys. With a heritage of wool spinning and agriculture from the Industrial Revolution, it now offers stunning South Pennine and Peak District views, plus handsome stone buildings. This thriving village boasts excellent amenities, Saddleworth’s largest park with skateboard area and tennis courts, a canal marina, and the train station on the Real Ale Rail Trail—ideal for Manchester trips. Enjoy live music and comedy at local pubs. Saddleworth hosts festivals like the famed Whit Friday brass band contest (from ‘Brassed Off’) and ‘Yanks’ weekend. Weekly events include canal festivals, vintage rallies, Rushcart procession, real ale fest, morris dancing and farmers’ market. Nearby: Dovestone Reservoir for walks and boating; Castleshaw Valley’s Roman fort trail. Nearby attractions.
About Peak District
Pulling up to the lodge around teatime on Friday, I was gobsmacked. Secluded doesn’t even cover it – we wound down a narrow lane past drystone walls, and there it was: a swish wooden lodge nestled in a pocket of woodland, with the fells rising sharply behind. First impressions? Pure luxury without the pretension. The hot tub steamed invitingly on the deck, our two daft Labradors bounded out of the car tails wagging like propellers, and the scent of pine and damp earth hit us like a warm hug. Inside, it was all plush sofas, a telly bigger than my flat’s kitchen, and a kitchen that screamed “cook a proper roast later.” We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and planned our first hike for the morrow, figuring the Peak District’s walking trails were calling. Saturday dawned with that classic British promise: blue skies peeking through, so we laced up our boots and headed straight for the Dovestone Reservoir loop, just a stone’s throw from the lodge. It’s about a three-mile circuit, undulating along the water’s edge with views that make you forget the world. The dogs were in heaven, splashing in the shallows while we puffed up the initial climb to the Chew Road ridge. Light-hearted banter flowed – Dave joking I’d packed enough snacks to feed the sheep population, me retorting he walks like he’s auditioning for a zombie flick. The weather held, crisp and invigorating, with skylarks twittering overhead. We paused at the waterfall viewpoint, munching pork scratchings, feeling like proper adventurers. Back at the lodge by lunch, first impressions solidified: this place is a walker’s dream, with trails literally on the doorstep. But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. By afternoon, as we eyed the steeper ascent to Chew Edge, clouds rolled in like uninvited guests. Fat raindrops turned the path to mud, and what was meant to be a triumphant summit push became a slippery comedy of errors. Dave skidded arse-over-tit into a puddle, emerging like a drowned rat, while I clung to a fence post giggling like a schoolkid. The dogs, unfazed, chased phantom rabbits through the mist. We aborted to the lodge, sodden but buzzing, and cranked the hot tub. Steaming under the downpour, beers in hand, it was pure bliss – that moment of gentle reflection hit me: why rush the hikes when the weather forces you to savour the now? The Peak District’s moods teach you that; one minute basking in glory, the next humbled by a squall. Sunday’s forecast was no better – lashing rain from dawn – so we adapted with a cheeky woodland wander closer to the lodge, dodging puddles along the lesser-known paths towards Binn Green. It was shorter, squelchier, but intimate: ferns brushing our knees, the reservoir a moody silver under the gloom. The changing plans kept it fresh; no rigid itineraries, just boots on, dogs off-lead, and whatever the hills threw at us. First impressions of Dovestone? It’s not just a lodge; it’s a launchpad for these unpredictable walking escapades, where the weather’s whims make the best stories. By Monday checkout, tea-spill forgotten, we were already plotting a return. If you fancy a Peak District getaway blending luxury digs with proper hikes and a side of soggy laughs, this is your spot. Cheers to that! |
