I finally made it to Dovestone Luxury Lodges after a bit of a faff on the winding roads from Oldham, my ancient Volvo spluttering like it was auditioning for a comedy sketch. We'd set off from Manchester that grey Friday morning, me, the wife, our two lads (ages 10 and 12), and the soppy Labrador, Rufus, who was already drooling over the picnic hamper in the boot. The lads were off like shots, whooping as they raced to the lodge door, while I wrestled the luggage and wondered if I'd packed enough tea bags for the apocalypse.

Stepping inside was pure bliss. The open-plan living space screamed cosy luxury without trying too hard – squishy leather sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burner ready for a evening crackle (even if it was still summery), and a kitchen that could handle my half-arsed attempts at cooking. The scent of fresh linen hit us first, mingled with that faint piney whiff from the surrounding woods. "Mum, check this out!" yelled the youngest from the master bedroom, flinging himself onto the king-sized bed like it was a trampoline. Three generous bedrooms in total, all en-suite, meant no early-morning queue for the loo – a godsend with teenage boys who drink like camels.

First impressions? Spot on for a chilled family break. We dumped the bags and cracked open the fizz (non-alcoholic for the kids, obviously), spilling a bit on the slate worktops in our excitement. Chaos reigned for a good half-hour: Rufus stealing a sausage from the fridge, one lad claiming the top bunk in the twin room before his brother could blink, and me realising I'd forgotten the barbecue tongs. We spilled out onto the deck as the sun broke through, the hot tub steaming invitingly with views straight across the reservoir. Dovestone's right on your doorstep here – a quick five-minute wander and you're at the water's edge, where we skimmed stones and watched windsurfers dotting the waves. The Peaks' magic is in these simple pleasures: the hush of the woods, the fresh air that makes you breathe deeper, the way the light dances off the hills. No grand plans, just us lot soaking it up, the dog snoring in a sunbeam, and laughter echoing as the boys splashed about.

Sitting there later, towel-dried hair dripping into my tea, I had one of those quiet moments. Work's been manic lately, hasn't it? Emails piling up, that constant buzz. But here, with the family giggling over a card game inside and the moors stretching out timeless, I felt properly reset. Not some Instagram-perfect zen, but real, scruffy contentment. Dovestone had us hooked from minute one – mishaps and all. Can't wait to rabbit on about the rest of the weekend, but blimey, what a cracking start.
