About Dovestone Luxury Lodges (Sleeps 4) Pets Welcome.
Greenfield is one of seven villages in the 18,000 acres of Saddleworth's moorland hills, fields and valleys. With a heritage of wool spinning and agriculture from the Industrial Revolution, it's now a scenic South Pennine and Peak District spot boasting stunning views and stone-built charm. The village offers ample amenities, Churchill Playing Fields (Saddleworth's largest park with skateboard park and tennis courts), a canal marina and the train station – a key stop on the Real Ale Rail Trail with easy Manchester access. Enjoy live music from folk to classical at pubs, plus the Off the Rails comedy club. Saddleworth hosts festivals like the famed Whit Friday brass band contest (from 'Brassed Off') and the Yanks weekend. Nearly every weekend brings events: canal festivals, vintage rallies, Rushcart procession, real ale fest, morris dancing or Farmers Market. Nearby: Dovestone Reservoir for walks and boating; Castleshaw Valley's Roman fort trail. Nearby attractions.
About Peak District
Pulling up to our Dovestone Luxury Lodge (sleeps 4, pets welcome—though my mongrel, Rufus, was already snoring in the boot), I was hit with that instant "ahh" feeling. Tucked away in this serene spot just shy of the Saddleworth hills, it looked like the kind of place dreams are made of: low-slung timber with a veranda that screamed "put your feet up." We grabbed our bags—me, the missus, and Rufus—and stepped inside. Blimey, it was lush. Cosy as a hug from your nan, with plush sofas begging to be sunk into, a wood burner ready for a lazy evening crackle (even if it was a mild May day), and a kitchen that had every gadget under the sun. The spa access was the real kicker—a private hot tub just off the deck, steaming gently like it knew we'd arrived knackered. First impressions? Pure bliss. We dumped the bags and cracked open a couple of tins from the local shop in Uppermill—proper Peak District ale, hoppy and moor-fresh. Rufus claimed the rug by the bifold doors straight away, tail thumping as he surveyed his kingdom. The garden was a dream: enclosed, wildflower-dotted, with views over Dovestone Reservoir that made you forget the world. No itinerary, no rushing off to hike Kinder Scout or whatever. Nah, this trip was about doing bugger all, and the lodge was built for it. That first afternoon, we lounged on the veranda like lords of the manor. I cracked open my battered copy of Wind in the Willows—don't judge, it's comfort reading—and let the sun warm my toes while the missus sipped tea and flicked through a magazine. Rufus chased imaginary squirrels in the grass, then flopped down for a nap. Laughter bubbled up when he rolled in something suspiciously muddy; "Peak District spa treatment," I quipped, hosing him down with the outside tap. No grand adventures, just that gentle rhythm of birdsong and lapping water from the nearby reservoir. Evening rolled in slow as treacle. We pottered about five minutes down the road to the quiet paths around the Dovestone edges—nothing strenuous, just a meander with Rufus off-lead, breathing in that crisp air laced with heather. Back at the lodge, hot tub time: bubbling away under the stars, a glass of red in hand, chatting about nothing much. The luxury hit different here—no pretension, just thoughtful touches like the fluffy robes and that massive telly for a binge-watch if the mood took us. Sat there soaking, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life's always go-go-go back home—work emails at dawn, school runs, the lot. But arriving at Dovestone, with its unhurried vibe, made me realise how rare it is to just... be. No pressure to conquer peaks or tick boxes; the joy was in the slowness, the lodge wrapping us in its cosy arms. Rufus snored nearby, the missus smiled across the bubbles, and I thought, "This is it, innit? Proper holiday magic." Day one set the tone for our three lazy days: reading in the garden, short strolls to the reservoir's edge for a picnic of cheese butties from the local deli, and endless cups of tea watching the clouds scoot over the moors. Dovestone Luxury Lodges nailed that art of doing very little, brilliantly. If you're after Peak District peace without the pace, book it—you won't want to leave. |
