About Peak District
I finally made it to Dovestone Luxury Lodges after a bit of a faff on the winding roads from Oldham. Picture this: me, sat nav in hand, trundling along those narrow Peak District lanes with the hills rising up like they've got all the time in the world. I'd packed light – just a book, some tea bags, and a vague plan to do bugger all for three days. But about five minutes from the turn-off, I misjudged a pothole (classic me), and my thermos of coffee went flying, soaking the passenger seat. "Brilliant," I muttered, mopping it up with a spare sock. Still, it was a laugh, and nothing a quick stop at the nearby Spar couldn't fix with a fresh brew.

Pulling up to the lodge around teatime, I was proper chuffed. Nestled in a quiet spot near Dovestone Reservoir, it's one of those pet-free havens that sleeps four comfortably – perfect for me solo, though I could see it being ace for a couple or small family. The exterior's all smart wood cladding with a private deck that screams "put your feet up." I unlocked the door, and blimey, the first impression hit like a warm hug. Inside, it's cosy as owt: plush sofas begging to be lounged on, a wood-burning stove (unlit, but tempting), and a kitchen that's kitted out better than mine at home – think gleaming hob, massive fridge, and all the pots you'd need for a lazy fry-up.

I dumped my bag and headed straight for the garden. It's a proper suntrap, enclosed and private, with views over the reservoir's glassy water and those moody moors beyond. No barking dogs or kids' toys – just birdsong and the odd ripple from a breeze. I plonked myself on a lounger with my book (some daft crime thriller I'd been saving), a cuppa, and let the world slow right down. That's the joy of it, innit? After months of rushing about, arriving here felt like slamming the brakes. No itinerary, no alarms – just me, the sun dipping low, and the faint scent of pine from the surrounding woods.

First evening, I barely moved. Nipped out for a gentle wander along the reservoir path – it's literally a stone's throw away, maybe a mile loop if you're feeling energetic, but I took it dead slow, stopping to skim stones and watch a heron take off like it owned the place. Back at the lodge, I cracked open a bottle of red (fridge had chilled it perfectly), rustled up pasta from the cupboards, and ate on the deck as the sky turned that incredible Peak District pink. The hot tub caught my eye – bubbling away under the stars – but I saved it for later; first impressions are for savouring, not splashing about.

Next morning, same vibe. Woke late to birds chirping, brewed coffee in the fancy machine, and retreated to the garden with toast and the papers on my phone. No plans, just reading till my eyes went fuzzy, then a doze in the hammock. It's daft how liberating doing nowt feels – like giving your brain permission to switch off. I reflected on that over lunch: life's too full of hustle, and here, in this little luxury bubble, I realised I'd been missing the point. Why rush when you can linger?

By day three's arrival glow still lingering, I'd explored a tad more – a flat stroll to the sailing club by the water, picking up pasties from the local café for picnics. But mostly, it was lodge life: feet up, book open, hot tub soak with a cheeky GandT, watching clouds drift over the hills. Dovestone's got me hooked on the art of bugger all – pure, unadulterated slow-down bliss. If you're after Peak District peace without the crowds, this is your spot. Can't wait to go back.
