About Peak District
Amour Deluxe is one of those spots that hits you right in the feels the moment you step out of the car. Tucked into the high Peak District, it's a cosy stone-built beauty with those classic slate roofs and a garden that spills out towards the hills. Glossop's just a stone's throw away—close enough for a quick pub lunch if needed, but far enough to feel like your own private slice of countryside. I arrived mid-afternoon on a Friday, bags in hand, and the host had left a cheeky note on the door: "Welcome to Amour—mind the weather, it's got a mind of its own!" Prophetic words. First impressions? Pure luxury in a rustic wrapper. The place screams romance—plush king-size bed piled high with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire, and a rainfall shower that could've washed away a week's worth of city stress. But I wasn't here to lounge (much); no, it was all about those Peak District walks. I'd mapped out a cracker: the trail up to the Doctor's Gate Roman road, starting right from the cottage doorstep. It's one of those classic short hikes, maybe three miles round trip, winding through heather moorland with views over the Woodlands Valley. Weather app said partly cloudy, so off I went, boots laced, flask of tea in tow. Day one hike was a dream. Blue skies, crisp autumn air that nips at your cheeks just enough to make you feel alive. I crunched along the path, past gnarled oaks turning gold, spotting a few hardy walkers with dogs bounding about. The Roman stones peeking through the grass felt ancient and timeless—proper Peak District magic. By the top, I was buzzing, snapping pics of the valley stretching out like a patchwork quilt. Back at Amour Deluxe by sunset, I lit the stove, cracked open a bottle of red, and reflected on how daft it is that I don't do this more often. Work emails piling up back home? Sod 'em. This is what recharges the soul. Saturday morning, though? British weather pulled its classic switcheroo. Woke to horizontal rain lashing the windows—proper Peak District deluge. My ambitious plan for the Cown Edge Way, that undulating ridge walk with panoramic views, was scuppered. "Sod it," I thought, chuckling to myself over porridge. Improv time: a shorter loop around Old Glossop, sticking to the lower paths where the old packhorse trails weave between drystone walls. Waterproofs on, hood up, I ventured out into the mizzle. It was grim at first—mud sucking at my boots, visibility down to about 50 yards—but there's something oddly brilliant about it. The rain freshened everything; streams gurgled louder, the air smelled of wet earth and sheep wool. I laughed out loud when a gust nearly bowled me over near the parish church ruins. No views today, but the intimacy of it all—the way the mist cloaks the hills like a soft blanket—felt more real than any postcard panorama. By afternoon, the clouds parted just enough for a gentle stroll along the trail to the edge of the moors, where the sun peeked out and turned the puddles to mirrors. Back at the cottage, dripping but chuffed, I peeled off soggy layers and sprawled by the Aga with a cuppa. That weather flip taught me something gentle: plans are bollocks out here. The Peaks don't care about your itinerary; they hand you what they've got, and you make the best of it. Amour Deluxe was the perfect base—snug, warm, with those big windows framing every moody sky shift. Sunday dawned brighter, teasing one last hurrah: a quick jaunt up the local bridleway for those elusive views. Misty remnants clung to the valleys, but the sun won out, gilding the heather. First impressions sealed it—this corner of the Peak District, with Amour Deluxe as home base, is my new happy place. Who needs far-flung adventures when the weather's wild whims right on your doorstep deliver the lot? |
