I finally rocked up to the 2 Bed Lodge in Leek after a bit of a faff on the drive over from the motorway. It was one of those classic Peak District journeys – winding roads through the Staffordshire Moorlands, with those lush green hills rolling by and the odd sheep eyeing you suspiciously from the verges. We'd set off from home full of beans, kids in the back chattering about hiking to Treak Cliff Cavern or splashing about at the nearby lido, but about five miles out, disaster struck. Or rather, minor hilarity: my other half had packed the cool bag with all our picnic sarnies, only for it to tip over in the boot, turning our neatly buttered rolls into a soggy, mustard-smeared mess. "Well, that's lunch sorted," I quipped, scraping what I could back together while the kids howled with laughter. Typical family holiday chaos, innit?

Pulling into the drive of the lodge just before teatime, I was proper chuffed. Tucked away in a quiet spot on the edge of Leek, it's one of those cosy little hideaways that screams Peak District perfection – stone-built, with a pitched roof and flower baskets dangling cheerily by the door. Nothing flash, mind, just a proper two-bed cottage that's spot on for a chilled family break. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the first thing that hit me was the air. Fresh as a daisy, with that earthy whiff of damp moorland grass and a hint of woodsmoke from someone's chimney nearby. Leek's right on the doorstep, that proper market town vibe with its cobbled streets and indie shops, but the lodge feels worlds away from the hustle.

Flinging open the door, we were greeted by this warm, welcoming snug of a living room. Beamed ceiling, a cracking wood burner (we got it roaring later, obvs), and squishy sofas begging for a collapse. The kitchen was compact but kitted out lovely – enough counter space for me to bash up some pasta without elbowing anyone, and a window looking out over a pocket-handkerchief garden that's basically a wildflower meadow in disguise. Up the creaky stairs (love a good creak, reminds me of Nan's old place), the bedrooms were dead cosy: one double with a view straight onto the hills, and a twin for the kids, complete with bunk beds that had them whooping like they'd won the lottery. "This is better than home!" my youngest declared, diving under the quilt. Cheeky monkey.

First impressions? Blissful simplicity. We dumped our stuff and headed out for a potter around Leek before it got dark – just a ten-minute stroll to the high street, where we grabbed fish and chips from a no-nonsense chippy, the kind that wraps 'em in proper paper and douses 'em in vinegar. Sat on a bench by the old market cross, munching away as the sun dipped behind the Moorlands, I couldn't help but grin. No grand plans, no epic treks yet – just this unhurried joy of being somewhere else, together. The kids were knackered already from the drive drama, mooching about spotting pigeons, while we adults nursed mugs of tea from the lodge's welcome pack (cheers for the biscuits, by the way).

That evening, as we lit the fire and the little ones conked out early, I had a quiet moment staring into the flames. Holidays like this make you reflect, don't they? Amid the lodge life chaos – the spilled lunch, the overstuffed boot, the inevitable sock lost under the sofa – it's these simple pleasures that recharge the batteries. No screens, no rush, just us, a cracking little spot in the Peak District, and the promise of more lazy days ahead. Can't beat it.
