About Oh Deer.
Lying at the southern end of the Peak District, Ashbourne is a classic English market town with a bustling marketplace, eccentric street layout, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns, and almshouses. In its 18th-century heyday, it was a fashionable social hub, and many fine Georgian buildings survive. Today, it boasts excellent restaurants and inns, is a haven for antique hunters (though bargains are scarce!), and offers access to the Dove and Manifold Valleys for outdoor pursuits. Thrill-seekers can head to nearby Alton Towers. Nearby attractions.
About Derbyshire
Shaken but not stirred, I eventually emerged onto the proper road, just a couple of miles from Ashbourne, the Dales unfolding around me like a postcard come to life. Rolling hills dusted with heather, dry-stone walls snaking through the landscape, and that crisp Peak District air rushing through the window—it was pure tonic after the feathery fiasco. "Oh Deer" is tucked away in a peaceful spot near Ashbourne, the kind of place where the nearest neighbour is a sheep with opinions, and as I crunched up the gravel drive, the chaos of the journey melted away. The cottage itself is a proper gem: a cosy stone-built beauty with a cheeky deer motif on the sign that had me chuckling—especially after my avian encounter. I parked up, grabbed my weekend bag, and fumbled the key from the secure box, half-expecting another wildlife ambush. Stepping inside was like being hugged by a warm Aga. The living room hit me first—low-beamed ceiling, a plush sofa begging for a collapse, and a wood-burning stove already laid with kindling, promising evenings of crackling bliss. Sunlight streamed through the windows onto flagstone floors scattered with colourful rugs, and that faint scent of fresh linen and lavender hung in the air. I dumped my stuff and wandered through to the kitchen, all gleaming granite worktops, a Belfast sink big enough for a bubble bath, and a retro toaster that screamed "make me some Marmite on toast." It was spot-on for rustling up a cuppa, which I did pronto, spilling a bit in my haste because, let's face it, I'm no Gordon Ramsay. Upstairs, the bedrooms were a dream—soft beds piled with duck-down duvets, views over the garden where wildflowers nodded in the breeze. The en-suite had a rainfall shower that whispered promises of post-hike luxury, though I was already plotting a mooch around the nearby trails. Peeking out the back, the private patio caught my eye: a sturdy wooden table, bistro chairs, and a charcoal BBQ under a pergola draped in climbers. Perfect for al fresco suppers, with the Dales' gentle hills as your backdrop. I sat there with my tea, feet up, letting the peace sink in. After the morning's madness—the sat-nav rebellion, the pheasant protest—it was like the universe saying, "Slow down, mate, you've arrived." That first hour at "Oh Deer" was pure magic, a gentle nudge to my frantic self. In the rush of life back home, I rarely pause to breathe, but here, amid the birdsong and buttery light, I felt a quiet reflection steal over me: maybe mishaps like that pheasant were just the Peaks' way of making the good bits shine brighter. As the sun dipped towards the drystone walls, I knew this was the start of something restorative. Derbyshire, you've got me hooked already. |
