About Derbyshire
I’ll never forget the drive to Honeysuckle Lodge last month – a proper Derbyshire jaunt that started with me taking a wrong turn near Chesterfield and ending up in a muddy farm lane, swearing at the satnav like it was my ex. Three days in this cosy little gem of a lodge, tucked away in the Chesterfield district, and it was all about those serendipitous discoveries, the hidden corners you stumble upon when you ditch the map and let the hills lead you astray. No grand itineraries, just me, a decent cuppa, and the thrill of getting lost in the Peak District’s quieter folds.

Pulling up after that daft detour – which, let’s be honest, added a good half-hour of scenic views I’d have missed otherwise – the lodge hit me like a warm hug. Nestled in a peaceful spot just off the beaten track, it’s the sort of place that whispers “relax” from the moment you park. Picture a chocolate-box cottage with honeysuckle climbing the walls (no prizes for guessing the name), a private hot tub bubbling away like it’s expecting company, and those classic Derbyshire stone walls enclosing a private garden that feels miles from anywhere. First impressions? Pure bliss. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window to let in the fresh moorland air, and thought, “This is it – no crowds, no faff, just me and whatever secrets these lanes are hiding.”

That first afternoon, I fancied a wander, no plan in mind. Wandered out from the lodge down a winding path that Google Maps doesn’t even acknowledge, and blimey, what a find. Stumbled on a tucked-away dell by a babbling brook, wildflowers everywhere and not a soul in sight. Sat there with my flask of tea, feet in the water, listening to the curlews calling overhead. It was one of those moments where you realise how daft it is to stick to the main roads – this hidden gem, maybe a ten-minute amble from Honeysuckle, felt like my private Peak District paradise. Laughed to myself thinking how I’d have driven right past it on a proper route, nose buried in the A-roads.

Next morning, fueled by the lodge’s well-stocked kitchen (hello, that Aga cooking up bacon butties like a dream), I hopped in the car for a “quick drive” that turned into delightful aimlessness. Veered off onto a single-track lane – the kind that makes you pray no tractor’s coming the other way – and happened upon an old packhorse bridge, half-forgotten under ivy, spanning a crystal stream. Parked up, scrambled down for a closer look, and there it was: a wild swimming hole, all glassy green and inviting. No signs, no tourists, just the gentle rush of water and sheep bleating in the distance. Dove in (well, more of a ginger paddle – it was brass monkey weather), and emerged grinning like an idiot. Back at the lodge, wrapped in a towel by the hot tub, steaming gently as the sun broke through, I had one of those quiet reflections: life’s too short for signposted paths. Getting lost here isn’t a mishap; it’s the magic.

By evening, another accidental treasure: a wee farm shop I clocked at the end of a potholed track, not even listed online. Proper local produce – Derbyshire cheeses that could make you weep, homemade chutneys, and pork pies to die for. Chatted with the farmer’s wife about the best hidden walks (turns out she knows every secret spot within spitting distance), and stocked up for a fireside feast back at Honeysuckle. Cosied up in the lounge with its beams and wood-burner crackling, pie in hand, I toasted to serendipity. That first full day encapsulated it all – the lodge’s serene vibe drawing you out into these off-the-beaten-path delights, each one better than the last.

Those initial impressions of Honeysuckle Lodge linger like the scent of woodsmoke: a perfect base for embracing the joy of the unknown, where every wrong turn unearths a hidden Derbyshire delight. If you’re after proper peace and accidental adventures, this is your spot. Can’t wait to get lost there again.
