About Derbyshire
Pulling into the drive, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those proper Premier Lodges – think luxurious wooden haven tucked into the Derbyshire Dales, just a stone's throw from the famous stepping stones at Dovedale. The place screams Peak District charm: wraparound decking for alfresco cups of tea, floor-to-ceiling windows framing the lush valley, and inside, it's all plush sofas, a telly bigger than my flat's, and a kitchen kitted out for lazy fry-ups. I dumped my bags, cracked open a brew, and stepped out for that first lungful of fresh air. The weather was playing nice – blue skies, a gentle breeze rustling the trees – so I laced up my boots for an inaugural wander down to the River Dove, barely a ten-minute stroll away. First impressions? Magic. That initial hike along the dale was pure Derbyshire bliss. I followed the well-trodden path past those iconic stepping stones, where families were splashing about like otters, and clambered up the gentle slope towards Lover's Leap. The limestone cliffs towered above, dripping with ferns, and the river chuckled below. I felt like I'd stepped into a Brontë novel, minus the brooding moors. Light-hearted chuckle here: I nearly twisted my ankle posing for a selfie at the Leap viewpoint, pretending to swoon like some Victorian lass. "Mind your footing, you daft sod," I muttered to myself, which sums up my hiking prowess. But oh, the British weather – it's got a wicked sense of humour, doesn't it? By day two morning, as I set out for a loop up to Thorpe Cloud, that cheeky little hill you can bag in under an hour, the clouds rolled in like uninvited guests. One minute I'm basking in tentative sun, striding through buttercup meadows with skylarks overhead; the next, fat raindrops are pelting down, turning the path into a slippery slide. I hunkered under a tree, hood up, laughing at the absurdity – me, the eternal optimist, who'd packed shorts and factor 50, now looking like a drowned rat. Plans shifted sharpish: instead of summiting and picnicking with a view, I retreated for a hot shower back at the lodge, where the underfloor heating was an absolute godsend. That soggy pivot led to my favourite first-day gem: a cheeky detour along the lower Dove path when the rain eased to a drizzle. Mist clung to the valley like fairy dust, wild garlic perfumed the air, and I spotted a flash of blue – kingfishers darting by the water. No grand adventures beyond a couple of miles, just that intimate, muddy ramble that felt utterly Derbyshire. Sat on the deck later, steaming mug in hand, watching the weather clear for a rainbow arching over the hills, I had a proper moment of reflection. In the rush of life back home, I rarely slow down enough to let the outdoors reset me like this. Here, drenched and daft as I was, it hit me: sometimes the best holidays are the ones where the weather writes the script, forcing you to savour the simple joy of a good walk and a warm lodge waiting. If you're after that Peak District fix without straying far, Dovedale Premier Lodge is the ticket – mishaps, monsoons, and all. Can't wait to go back. |
