About Derbyshire
Pulling up to the lodge that first afternoon, I was smitten straight away. Tucked down a leafy single-track road, it’s the sort of place that whispers “welcome” without shouting. A cosy stone cottage with a thatched roof vibe – well, not quite thatched, but you get the picture – surrounded by rolling fields and dry-stone walls that scream proper Derbyshire. The owner handed over the keys with a cheery “mind the sheep,” and as I lug my bag in, the first impression hit: this was heaven for anyone who loves ditching the map. No thumping great tourist hordes here; just peace, a wood-burning stove begging for logs, and French doors opening onto a private patio where the only neighbours are grazing cows. Unpacking took five minutes – I travel light, mostly socks and optimism – then I was out, fancying a wander before tea. No grand plans; I just followed a public footpath signposted “to the stepping stones” that I’d glimpsed from the garden. Famous Dovedale’s just down the road, with its dramatic gorge and those iconic river crossings, but I veered off the main path almost immediately, lured by a faint trail through a copse of hazel and oak. Bloody brilliant move. Within minutes, I’d stumbled on a tucked-away spot: a hidden limestone outcrop overlooking a babbling brook, where the water pooled into a natural jacuzzi. No one else in sight. I perched there with a flask of builder’s tea (proper strong, none of your wishy-washy nonsense), watching dippers bob about like feathered clockwork toys. How had I never heard of this little eyrie? Pure fluke, and all within a stone’s throw of the lodge. That evening, as the sun dipped behind Thorpe Cloud – that cheeky pyramid hill you can’t miss from the patio – I pottered back, grinning like an idiot. Dinner was simple: local Ashbourne pork pies from the village shop (cracking with mustardy relish) and a bottle of Derbyshire ale that tasted of hedgerows. Sat on the patio, fairy lights twinkling, I reflected gently on why I keep chasing these escapes. Life back home’s a treadmill of emails and errands; here, getting lost isn’t a faff, it’s the point. Makes you realise how rare it is to switch off the sat-nav brain and just breathe. Next morning, bleary from a sleep deeper than a coal mine, I set off again with zero itinerary. A wrong turn past some barns led me to a secret dell I dubbed “Forget-me-not Glade” – carpeted in blue flowers, with a wooden bench that looked like it’d been plonked there by woodland fairies. Turns out it’s an old packhorse trail remnant, used centuries ago by lead miners. Sat there munching a flapjack, I chuckled at myself: posh hiker I am not, tripping over roots like a tipsy toddler. But that’s the charm – no Instagram crowds, just me, the buzzards overhead, and the thrill of unearthing these off-the-beaten-track treasures. By day’s end, circling back via a winding bridleway that hugged the Dove Valley’s edge, I’d clocked another gem: a forgotten lime kiln half-swallowed by ivy, perfect for pondering life’s little kilns of our own. Dovedale Lodge isn’t just a base; it’s a launchpad for serendipity. If you fancy three days of accidental wonders – brookside reveries, wildflower hideaways, and the quiet thrill of paths less trod – book it. You’ll arrive frazzled, leave utterly found. |
