About Derbyshire
Stumbling out of the car onto the gravel drive of Amour Deluxe, though, all that chaos melted away faster than a Bakewell tart in the rain. Tucked away in this cosy corner of the High Peak, the cottage is a proper gem – a stone-built beauty that looks like it’s been plucked straight from a postcard of the Dark Peak moors. I’d booked it on a whim for its luxe touches, and blimey, it didn’t disappoint. The owners had left the lights on, glowing warmly against the slate-grey sky, and there it was: that instant hit of “ahh, this is proper lush.” I fumbled the key under the mat (classic cottage vibes), and stepped inside to the scent of fresh linen and woodsmoke from the log burner they’d set ready. First impressions? Overwhelmingly brilliant. The open-plan living space is pure indulgence – think squishy velvet sofas begging you to flop down, a telly bigger than my flat’s kitchen, and a kitchenette kitted out with every gadget known to man. I brewed a cuppa straight away (priority one after that drive), and it was perfection: Nespresso machine purring like a contented cat, posh biscuits on the side. The views from the lounge window? Magic. Rolling hills stretching out towards the moors, with Glossop’s twinkling lights just visible below. It’s that rare spot where you feel miles from it all, yet you could wander down to the local for a pint in five minutes flat. Wandering upstairs, I hit the jackpot with the bedroom – a superking bed piled high with goose-down pillows that screamed “sleep for England.” The en-suite was no afterthought either; rainfall shower hot enough to steam away the day’s daftness, fluffy towels warmed on the rail. I stood there in my soggy socks, grinning like an idiot, thinking, “Right, this is why we do these trips.” There’s a cheeky hot tub out the back too, shrouded in twinkly lights – I didn’t fire it up till later, but spotting it through the French doors had me plotting lazy bubbles under the stars. That first hour was pure bliss: I kicked off my boots, cranked the underfloor heating (yes, really), and just soaked it in. From the arrival pandemonium – sat-nav betrayal, rain-lashed windscreen, and my own daft charger forgetfulness – to this haven of cosiness, it was a reminder to slow down. Life’s too short for perfect journeys; it’s the unexpected detours that make the good stuff shine brighter. Amour Deluxe didn’t just welcome me; it wrapped me up like a favourite jumper. If you’re after a Derbyshire bolt-hole that turns first-night nerves into “never leaving” vibes, this is your spot. Can’t wait to go back – charger packed this time. |
