About Derbyshire
Pulling up to the lodge around teatime, I have to say, my first impressions were spot on – it looked every bit the cosy bolthole we'd booked for a relaxed break. Tucked away in a quiet spot in Stanton-by-Dale, just a stone's throw from the Erewash Valley's rolling fields, this two-bed cottage screamed "simple pleasures" from the off. The exterior was all classic Derbyshire charm: weathered stone walls, a pitched slate roof, and a little gravel drive where we dumped our bags amid much chaotic unloading. The boys were already racing about like feral puppies, kicking a football against the garden fence before we'd even got the keys. "Oi, save some energy for tomorrow!" I yelled, but secretly loving the lodge life chaos kicking in already. Inside, it was pure homely bliss. The open-plan living area welcomed us with a wood-burning stove (unlit, but promising evenings of toasting marshmallows), a squishy corner sofa piled with cushions, and a telly that mercifully worked straight away. Kitchen was compact but brilliant – fully kitted with everything from a proper kettle for my morning builder's tea to a slow cooker for chucking in a stew later. We raided the welcome pack (cheers for the local biscuits and milk) and cracked open some beers while the kids demolished a bag of Hula Hoops on the rug. First impressions? Spotless, warm, and just the right size for us lot – no vast echoing halls, just snug nooks that made it feel like our own little den. Stepping out the back door that first evening was magic. The private patio overlooked a pocket-handkerchief garden, with views stretching to the wooded hills of the nearby Erewash. Stanton-by-Dale's got that gentle Peak District fringe vibe without the crowds – you can hear birdsong over the distant hum of the M1, which oddly added to the realness. We fired up the BBQ (gas, thank goodness, no faffing with charcoal) and grilled some bangers from the Ilkeston butchers we'd spotted en route. The lads ran rings around the garden, pretending it was a jungle, while Sarah and I sipped wine and watched the sun dip behind the crags. Light chaos ensued when the football went over the fence – cue Dad on a rescue mission through the neighbour's hedge, emerging triumphant and muddy-kneed to heroic cheers. As the stars popped out that night, I plonked down on the patio chair for a moment of gentle self-reflection. Here we were, not conquering mountains or ticking off tourist traps, just breathing in the Derbyshire air, surrounded by family giggles and the faint scent of charred sausages. In the rush of life, we forget how these tiny escapes recharge the batteries – no grand adventures needed, just a decent lodge, a full belly, and loved ones causing delightful mayhem. First day in, and I was already dreading the drive home. If you're after a laid-back family break in Derbyshire's heart, this 2 Bed Lodge is the ticket – pure, unpretentious joy. |
