About Suffolk
Nestled in the heart of Mid-Suffolk, The Tack Room is one of those proper gems—a cosy little lodge that feels like it was plucked from a storybook. Converted from an old stable block, it's got that authentic rustic charm without tipping into twee. As I parked up on the gravel drive, crunching under the tyres, the first thing that hit me was the quiet. No roar of traffic, just birdsong and the distant low of cattle. The owner, a cheery chap called Mike, popped out to greet me with a wave and a key, pointing out the fresh eggs from their hens and a jar of homemade chutney. "Settle in, love," he said with that warm Suffolk lilt. "No rush here." Stepping inside was like sinking into a hug. The open-plan living space is compact but perfect—beamed ceiling, a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy fire, and squishy sofas draped in woolly throws. The kitchen's kitted out with everything you'd need for scoffing toast and brewing endless cups of tea, and that Aga-style cooker promised slow simmers rather than speedy meals. Up the creaky stairs, my bedroom was a haven: crisp white linen on a king-sized bed, views straight out to the garden, and a bathroom with a roll-top bath that screamed "soak for hours." First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. No smart TVs or gadgets; just peace, and a stack of board games gathering dust, hinting at rainy-day fun. But oh, the garden—that stole the show. Enclosed and utterly private, it's a wildish patch of lawn fringed with lavender and roses, a couple of weathered benches, and a fire pit for evening stars. I dumped my bags, grabbed a GandT from the fridge, and flopped onto a lounger as the sun set. Watching bees bumble about and clouds drift was my grand plan for day one. No itinerary, no alarms—just the joy of doing bugger all. That night, I lit the stove, cracked open my book (a dog-eared copy of Far from the Madding Crowd—fitting, eh?), and let the warmth seep in. Dinner was simple: local bread, cheese from a Stowmarket farm shop I'd spotted en route, and that chutney. Pure indulgence in idleness. Come morning, the magic deepened. Waking to birds rather than bins lorry rumble felt like a gift. Breakfast in the garden—those eggs scrambled with a knob of butter—stretched into an hour of nothing but sipping coffee and pondering clouds. A gentle wander down the lane revealed Suffolk at its laziest: hedgerows heavy with blackberries, a nearby footpath meandering to a babbling brook no more than a mile off. I pottered back with a punnet of fruit, resisting the urge to "do" anything productive. Instead, I sprawled in the hammock with my novel, losing hours to Hardy’s tales while the breeze rustled the leaves. It's funny, isn't it? In our rush-rush world, arriving somewhere that nudges you to slow down prompts a quiet reflection. There I was, mid-forties and fizzing with city energy, yet The Tack Room whispered, "You've earned this pause." No grand adventures needed—just the simple thrill of a cosy nook, a blooming garden, and time to breathe. By the end of that first full day, I was hooked on the rhythm of very little. Suffolk had worked its spell already, and I had two more days to savour it. |
