About Suffolk
Pulling up to The Farmhouse was like stepping into a Constable painting – all honeyed stone walls, ivy creeping up the gables, and that quintessential pitched roof under a vast Suffolk sky. It’s tucked away on the Nether Hall Estate, surrounded by rolling paddocks and ancient oaks, yet only a stone’s throw from Pakenham village. No thumping traffic or tourist hordes; just the distant low of cattle and birdsong. We tumbled out, bags spilling everywhere, and the chaos kicked off immediately. The boys dashed to the front door while I wrestled the key from its lockbox, only for Rufus the spaniel to bolt straight into a patch of nettles. Cue yelps, cold hose water, and me feeling like the world’s daftest dad as I dabbed his paws with dock leaves I’d hastily yanked from the verge. Inside, blimey, it was pure lodge-life bliss. The sitting room hit you first – beamed ceiling, a massive inglenook fireplace begging for logs (we didn’t light it straight away, too balmy), and squashy sofas draped in woolly throws. Sun streamed through leaded windows onto flagstone floors that screamed “kick off your wellies here.” Kitchen was a dream for lazy family breaks: Aga humming gently, stocked with Suffolk goodies like local honey and fresh milk from the estate farm. The lads raided the biscuit tin while we unpacked, their whoops echoing as they claimed bedrooms upstairs – cosy nooks with iron bedsteads, fluffy duvets, and views over meadows where sheep grazed like fluffy clouds had fallen earthward. First impressions? It felt like the farmhouse had been waiting for us. We cracked open a pot of tea (proper builder’s brew, none of your herbal nonsense), and slumped in the garden – a wild-ish patch with a swinging bench and apple trees heavy with fruit. The air smelled of cut grass and earth, that deep Suffolk scent that makes London feel like a bad dream. Chaos ensued when the boys discovered the chickens clucking in the nearby coop; they spent an hour “rescuing” eggs that weren’t quite ready, one cracking spectacularly down my shirt. Light-hearted pandemonium, the kind that glues families together. Wandering the estate paths that first afternoon sealed it. We ambled less than a mile to Pakenham’s sleepy green, passing wildflower verges buzzing with bees and a pond where moorhens bobbed. No grand plans, just simple joys: skipping stones, picking blackberries (slightly sharp, perfect with estate cream later), and breathing easy. Sat on a log, watching the sunset paint the sky pink over the hall’s silhouette, I had a quiet moment. Life’s rush – work emails, school runs – it all faded. Here, amid the gentle Suffolk hush, I realised these unhurried pockets are what recharge you. The Farmhouse wasn’t just a holiday let; it was a soft landing for the soul. Can’t wait to go back. |
