About Suffolk
We arrived mid-afternoon on the first day, bumping down the lane to Green Valley Farm with the car groaning under the weight of our overpacked boot. The Dairy itself is a cracking little conversion – think cosy stone walls, a wood-burner that promised evenings of telly and tea, and a private hot tub tucked away like a secret. But it was the immediate surroundings that hooked me. No sooner had we unpacked than I wandered off for a “quick recce,” only to find myself knee-deep in a wildflower meadow that backed right onto the cottage. It wasn’t on any map; just a sea of buttercups and clover buzzing with bees, with a rickety stile leading to a footpath nobody seemed to use. I sat there for an hour, munching a pasty from the boot, feeling like I’d gatecrashed paradise. Proper hidden gem, that – the sort you only find when you veer off the path. First impressions? Blimey, it felt like stepping into a postcard of rural Suffolk, but the unvarnished version. The farm’s working – you hear the lowing of cows at dawn, and there’s a faint whiff of hay that’s oddly comforting. That evening, instead of faffing with menus, we fired up the BBQ (supplied, thank goodness) and let curiosity lead us on a dusk stroll. Barely half a mile from the door, we tripped over an ancient dew pond, shimmering in the fading light, surrounded by gnarled oaks that must’ve seen centuries of shepherds. No signs, no tourists – just us, a couple of pints from a local brewer we’d grabbed en route, and the thrill of discovery. I chuckled to myself, thinking how I’d planned a “proper itinerary” back home, only to bin it on arrival. Getting lost here wasn’t a faff; it was the point. Day two dawned misty, and after a fry-up in the rayburn-equipped kitchen – sausages from the farm shop down the lane, naturally – we decided to embrace the chaos. A “shortcut” through the woods (my idea, naturally) spat us out at a forgotten orchard heavy with windfalls. Crab apples everywhere, perfect for a impromptu crumble later. It was all accidental magic: pushing through brambles to find a babbling brook where otters might’ve frolicked (we didn’t see any, but the signs were there), or spotting a weathered bench overlooking a valley that felt like our private realm. Suffolk’s coast is famous, sure, but these micro-adventures within spitting distance of The Dairy? Pure gold. Light humour in the air too – me slipping on wet leaves and landing arse-over-tit, emerging covered in mud but grinning like an idiot. By the third morning, as I sipped coffee on the patio watching rabbits hop across the lawn, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Life back home’s a treadmill of deadlines and doom-scrolling; here, in this unassuming corner of Ubbeston, I’d rediscovered the joy of aimless wandering. No grand hikes, no Instagram hotspots – just serendipitous finds like the hidden dew pond or that secret orchard, all because we let the lanes lead us astray. The Dairy isn’t just a stay; it’s a launchpad for Suffolk’s quiet wonders. If you fancy ditching the crowds for accidental bliss, pack your boots and get lost here. You won’t regret it. |
