About Suffolk
I’ll never forget the drive to River View in Aldeburgh – a proper Suffolk jaunt that started with me spilling half a thermos of builder’s tea all over the passenger seat just past Woodbridge. “Classic me,” I muttered, mopping it up with a service station napkin while swearing at the SatNav for its cheery “recalculating” tone. But as the hedgerows thickened and the salty tang of the North Sea crept into the vents, any grumpiness evaporated. Suffolk Coastal was living up to its postcard promise, and I was buzzing to check into this riverside gem for a three-day unwind.

Pulling up to River View, right by the River Alde, I was gobsmacked. It’s one of those picture-perfect cottages – whitewashed walls, a cheeky blue door, and windows framing the reedbeds like a Constable painting come to life. First impressions? Blissful. The garden sloped gently to the water’s edge, where a heron stood sentinel, eyeing me suspiciously as if I’d gatecrashed its fishing spot. I dumped my bags, cracked open a window, and let the breeze carry whispers of marsh and tide. No traffic hum, just the lap of water and distant cries of curlews. Proper escapism.

But the real magic kicked off the second I stepped out for a mooch. Aldeburgh’s a stone’s throw away – all shingle beach and high street charm – and it’s crawling with characters who make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a gentler Ealing comedy. First up was Doris, the octogenarian landlady type who wasn’t actually the landlady but insisted on showing me “the lay of the land” anyway. She was pottering by the river path with her Jack Russell, Percy, who yapped at my trainers like they’d personally offended him. “New ’ere, are ya?” she beamed, peering over her half-moons. “Mind the incoming tide – it’s sneaky, like my ex-husband. Swallows cars whole if you’re daft enough to park low.” I chuckled, asking about her favourite local haunts. “Oh, the Scallop’s a must,” she winked, nodding to Maggi Hambling’s shiny shellfish sculpture on the beach. “Maggie’s a mate – bit bonkers, but brilliant. Sits there pondering life while we lot scoff fish and chips.” Percy nipped my ankle for emphasis, and Doris swatted him with a laugh. “He’s all mouth, like the fishermen down the pub.”

Wandering into town, I hit the butcher’s for some local sausages – pork and apple, naturally – and got chatting with Tom, the ruddy-faced chap behind the counter. He’s third-generation Aldeburgh, with forearms like hams and stories for days. “River View, eh? Prime spot for spotting seals,” he grinned, wrapping my parcel with flourish. “Last week, old Bill from the lifeboat shed swore he saw a mermaid. Bollocks, of course, but keeps the tourists coming. You watch – at dusk, they pop up like nosy neighbours.” I pressed him on the best pint; he directed me to The East of Anglia pub, warning, “Avoid the karaoke on Wednesdays – sounds like seals mating.” His deadpan delivery had me in stitches, and I left feeling like I’d known him years.

By evening, back at the cottage, I bumped into Neville on the footpath – a retired fisherman with a beard like a bird’s nest and eyes twinkling with mischief. He was casting for sea trout, pipe clenched between teeth. “First time in Suffolk?” he gravelled. I nodded, admitting the tea spill debacle. “Ah, initiation ritual,” he roared. “Happened to me in ’72 – drove straight into a dyke chasing a pint. Stay put at River View, lad; it’s got the best view this side of Orford. And if the ghosts start rattling – they do, round midnight – just offer ’em a brew.” Ghosts? He swore the place was haunted by a smuggler from Nelson’s day. “Harmless, mind. Likes a chinwag about contraband brandy.”

Sipping tea on the patio as the sun dipped, painting the river gold, I reflected gently on it all. In the rush of London life, I’d forgotten how these quirky souls – Doris with her tide warnings, Tom’s seal yarns, Neville’s spectral mates – ground you. No grand adventures needed; just proper chats and cottage calm. River View wasn’t just a stay; it was a doorstep full of characters who made my first hours unforgettable. Can’t wait to return – Percy permitting.
