About Suffolk
I’d just about had it with the M25 crawl when the satnav cheerily announced we were only 20 minutes from Suffolk, but then—classic me—I took a wrong turn near Woodbridge and ended up in a muddy farm lane, tyres spinning like a bad episode of Top Gear. A quick reverse and a sheepish wave to the bemused farmer later, we were back on track, laughing about my legendary sense of direction. By the time we rolled up to Owl’s Retreat in Aldeburgh, the late afternoon sun was glinting off the sea, and I was starving.

Nestled in the Suffolk Coastal district, this cosy lodge at Chapel Barn Farm Lodges felt like a hug from an old mate the moment we stepped inside. Picture a chic little barn conversion: wooden beams, squishy sofas, and a kitchen that screamed “whip up a feast”. First impressions? Pure bliss. After dumping the bags, I raided the welcome basket—local Aldeburgh honey, fresh scones, and a bottle of Adnams ale that went down a treat while we unpacked. But let’s be honest, the real star was the kitchen; it was begging for some culinary chaos, and with Aldeburgh’s food scene on our doorstep, we were primed.

That first evening, we wandered the five-minute stroll to the high street, where the air smelled of smoked fish and chip fat—Suffolk heaven. We hit The Lighthouse, the pub right by the Scallop sculpture, for fish and chips that were so fresh you could almost hear the North Sea waves. Crispy batter, mushy peas just right, and a pint of Ghost Ship to wash it down. I demolished mine in record time, grinning like an idiot as the sun dipped behind the pebble beach. “This,” I declared to my other half, “is why we holiday.” Light-hearted banter with the barman about the best chippy spots sealed it; Aldeburgh locals know their grub.

Next morning—day two already shaping up as a food fest—we hit the weekly market just a stone’s throw away. Suffolk markets are legendary, and this one didn’t disappoint: stalls groaning under artisan cheeses from the nearby dairy, plump strawberries from Thorpeness fields, and crusty loaves from the village bakery. I haggled (badly) for a wheel of Suffolk Gold and some smoked mackerel, feeling proper smug as we lugged our haul back to Owl’s Retreat. The lodge’s kitchen became mission control: I attempted a posh kedgeree with the mackerel, chucking in curry spices from the pantry. Disaster struck when I overdid the rice—gluggy as porridge—but we salvaged it with extra lemon and a heroic dash of Adnams. Sat outside on the patio, scoffing it with market-fresh bread, it tasted like victory. Light humour ensued as I quipped, “Chef Ramsay would’ve binned me, but in Suffolk, it’s all about the effort, innit?”

Afternoon pub crawl (the healthy kind) took us to The Aldeburgh Yacht Club bar, mere minutes away, for crab sandwiches on granary—succulent, sweet meat piled high with rocket and mayo. Washed down with a crisp white from the local vineyards, it was peak coastal nosh. Back at the lodge, first impressions deepened: the Aga-wannabe oven hummed along as we baked those market strawberries into a crumble, using oats from the welcome pack. Sticky, warm, and topped with clotted cream from a nearby farm shop—bliss.

By day three’s brekkie, self-reflection crept in over a fry-up I nailed this time: local sausages sizzling, eggs from the farm lodges’ own chickens, and thick-cut bacon. Sat there, coffee steaming, I pondered how Owl’s Retreat had turned our hasty arrival into a love letter to Suffolk’s larder. No fancy itineraries, just cracking food, cracking pubs, and the gentle rhythm of beachside eating. Those first impressions? They weren’t just good—they were the whole holiday in a nutshell. If you’re after a retreat where every meal feels like a discovery, this is your spot.
