About Suffolk
We rolled up mid-morning on a Friday, the lodge peeking out from its wooded spot like a cosy hideaway built for lazy luxury. Sleeps seven, it does, with that swanky private spa hot tub bubbling away on the deck – perfect for seven of us, though we were a snug party of five. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The wooden cladding gave it that Scandi-chic vibe amid Suffolk’s rolling fields, and the wraparound windows promised views that’d make you forget the world. We dumped the bags and cracked open the sliding doors to the deck, inhaling that fresh countryside air laced with woodsmoke from a neighbour’s chimney. Eager to stretch our legs after the drive, we laced up our wellies for a proper Suffolk hike. The lodge backs onto trails that weave through ancient woodlands and farmland – think Ickworth Park just a short stroll away, with its deer park and Capability Brown landscapes. The sun was peeking through, so off we went, plotting a circular route along the paths fringing the estate. It was idyllic at first: crunchy leaves underfoot, buzzards wheeling overhead, and the kids racing ahead to spot rabbits. I felt like a proper explorer, snapping pics of twisted oaks and pretending I knew the names of wildflowers – cow parsley, mostly, if the app was right. But oh, the weather – that capricious Suffolk beast. Halfway round, the sky turned from blue to battleship grey in minutes, and the heavens opened with a proper deluge. We dashed under a massive horse chestnut, laughing as water streamed off our hoods. “Plan B!” I yelled, herding everyone back towards the lodge. The wind whipped up, turning our gentle amble into a soggy sprint, and by the time we stumbled onto the deck, we were drenched but grinning like idiots. Light humour in the chaos: the littlest one declared it “the best rain ever,” while I slipped on the wet decking, landing flat on my bum. “Heroic retreat,” the wife quipped, helping me up. Back inside, peeling off sopping layers by the wood-burning stove (which we got roaring in no time), the first impressions deepened. That spa hot tub? Absolute godsend. We piled in, steam rising against the relentless drizzle outside, sipping hot chocolate and toasting our “epic fail” hike. It was one of those moments of gentle self-reflection – me sat there, bubbles up to my chin, thinking how these unplanned pivots are what holidays are about. Not conquering peaks, but rolling with Suffolk’s whims: sun one minute, squall the next. The lodge wrapped us in warmth, its plush sofas and that massive telly begging for a lazy afternoon, but the real magic was the views – rain-lashed trees swaying like they were in on the joke. Saturday dawned misty, so we tweaked plans for shorter walks closer to home. A loop around the lodge’s own woodland paths, dodging puddles and unearthing fungi (no eating those, kids). The weather teased again – a break in the clouds for a rainbow over the fields, then spotty showers that sent us scampering back. Each time, the lodge was our haven: deck for sunny spells, indoor nook for downpours. By Sunday, as we packed up, I was hooked on this rhythm of hike, weather-whack, hot tub recover. Suffolk’s not for the faint-hearted walker, but Elite Plus Spa Lodge 3? It’s the perfect base for it all – mishaps, mud, and marvellous first impressions that’ll have me booking again before the tea’s cold. |
