About Suffolk
Pulling up to Downbridge Lodge felt like stepping into a hug from an old mate. It's one of those proper Suffolk boltholes: a cosy two-bed cottage sleeping four, but perfect for solo souls like me craving solitude. The owners had left fresh eggs from local hens and a loaf of granary bread on the kitchen table – thoughtful touch that had me grinning before I'd even unpacked. I dumped my bags in the lounge, with its inglenook fireplace begging for a lazy log fire (though it was a balmy August day, so that was for later dreams), and flung open the French doors to the garden. Blimey, what a spot. Enclosed and private, with lawns rolling down to the River Dove babbling away at the bottom. Apple trees heavy with fruit, bird feeders twitching with finches, and a couple of weathered benches screaming "park your bum here and forget the world." First impressions? Pure bliss for doing sod all. That's the joy of it – no itinerary, no rush. I kicked off my shoes, brewed a massive mug of tea, and flopped into a sun lounger with my battered copy of Farthing Wood adventures (nostalgia hit hard). The garden wrapped around me like a fluffy blanket; bees droned lazily over lavender, and every so often a kingfisher flashed blue along the riverbank. I must've sat there three hours, reading a chapter, dozing, reading another, utterly content. No phone signal worth a damn, which was a blessing – forced me to switch off properly. Lunch was simple: those eggs scrambled with Suffolk ham from the village shop I'd nipped to on arrival, eaten al fresco while watching clouds do their slow-motion shapes. Wandering out for a gander around Hoxne was the extent of my "exploration" – and what a leisurely potter it was. The village is a postcard of flint cottages and the ancient church of St Edmund and St Mary, with its wonky tower that looks like it's had one too many at the pub. I ambled half a mile to the Oxfam shop for a second-hand thriller, chatted with the postmistress about her prize marrow at the horticultural show, and treated myself to a flapjack from the tearoom. No hikes, no tours – just soaking in the gentle hum of Suffolk life. Back at the lodge, I strung up a hammock between the trees (pro tip: they provide one), and swayed there with a GandT as the sun dipped, painting the garden gold. Dinner? A ploughman's from the fridge – cheddar, pickle, and that bread – devoured on the patio as bats started their evening ballet. That first afternoon, swinging in the hammock, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and doom-scrolling; here, time stretched like warm toffee. Why do we pack so much in when unwinding hits different? Downbridge Lodge nailed it – a haven for slowing right down, rediscovering the art of bugger all. As the stars winked on over Hoxne, I thought, "This is what holidays should be." Two more days of this? Count me in forever. |
