"Recalculating," it chirps, as I end up behind a tractor doing 10mph, mud splattering my windscreen like abstract art gone wrong. By the time I spotted the first "Aldeburgh 2 miles" sign, I was parched, slightly frazzled, and questioning my life choices. The mishap? I missed the turning for Danes House Lane entirely, thanks to that tractor blocking the view, and had to loop back through the high street, nearly clipping a cluster of posh cyclists in Lycra. Classic me – turning a 90-minute drive into a two-hour comedy of errors.

Pulling up outside Danes House (4) on that golden late-afternoon in early summer, though, all the chaos melted away like clotted cream on a scone. Tucked just off the main drag in Aldeburgh, it's one of those picture-perfect Suffolk cottages that looks like it's stepped straight out of a postcard – whitewashed pebble-dash walls, a thatched roof that's probably older than my gran, and a front garden bursting with lavender and roses that hit you with the most heavenly scent. I parked on the gravel drive (crunching satisfyingly under the tyres), grabbed my weekend bag, and fumbled the key code on the smart lock. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The door swung open to a cosy porch piled with wellies and beach gear, screaming "welcome to proper seaside living."

Stepping inside, I was proper gobsmacked. The living room's got this massive inglenook fireplace – not lit yet, but I could already imagine cosying up with a GandT later – and squishy sofas in muted blues and greys that just begged you to flop down. Back at the cottage, I cracked open that Adnams, fired up the log burner (they'd left kindling and matches – thoughtful bunch), and sprawled on the sofa with my feet up. Amid the arrival kerfuffle, I had a quiet moment of reflection: life's too short for sat-nav tantrums and city grind. Here, in this unassuming gem of a cottage, everything felt right-sized – simple, serene, and utterly restorative. Can't wait to wake up to that sea air tomorrow.
