About Buttercup Lodge.

Leiston sits in the heart of the Suffolk Heritage Coast, with great links to Southwold and Aldeburgh. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it thrived on steam tractors and metal products. Many Sizewell power plant workers live here, enjoying an active leisure centre and Suffolk's oldest purpose-built cinema, now with digital 3D projection.

About Suffolk
I finally made it to Buttercup Lodge after a bit of a faff on the drive down from London. It was one of those classic Suffolk journeys—motorway tailbacks giving way to narrow, hedge-lined lanes that twist around like they've got a mind of their own. I'd packed light, just my wellies and a waterproof, dreaming of crisp coastal walks, but about five miles out, disaster struck: a rogue pothole sent my thermos of tea flying across the passenger seat. Soggy maps and a dash of Earl Grey everywhere—classic me, turning a simple trip into a comedy sketch. Still, by early afternoon, I was pulling up to this darling little lodge tucked away in Leiston, right on the Suffolk Coastal path's doorstep.

Buttercup Lodge hit me like a warm hug the moment I stepped out. It's one of those picture-perfect thatched cottages, all wonky beams and flower baskets spilling over with lobelia and trailing ivy. The owner, a cheery local chap called Mike, handed over the keys with a grin and a warning: "Weather's proper Suffolk today—sun one minute, squall the next." He wasn't kidding. I dumped my bags in the cosy living room, with its Aga humming away and views straight out to the marshy fields, and laced up my boots for that first exploratory hike. The lodge backs right onto footpaths that snake towards the coast, so no faffing about with cars; it was straight out the gate and into the wild.

First impressions? Blissful solitude wrapped in that fresh, briny air you only get by the North Sea. I headed east along the Suffolk Coast Path, barely a mile from the door, where the flatlands stretch out like a patchwork quilt—golden reeds, grazing sheep, and the odd wind-bent hawthorn. The sun was blazing, turning the sky that impossible blue, and I was striding along feeling like I'd cracked the secret to proper relaxation. Pods of seals bobbed in the distance off Minsmere RSPB reserve, their heads popping up like cheeky neighbours spying on my stroll. I chuckled to myself, imagining them judging my enthusiastic waving.

But oh, the British weather—it's got a wicked sense of humour, doesn't it? Halfway to the shingle beach, about two miles in, the sky darkened faster than my mood after spilling that tea. Fat raindrops turned to horizontal hail in seconds, whipping across the marshes like nature's own power washer. I hunkered down behind a dune, hood up, laughing at the absurdity as a proper deluge soaked through my supposedly "waterproof" jacket. Plans for a jaunty beach ramble? Scrubbed. Instead, I pivoted inland along a sodden track back towards Leiston, dodging puddles the size of small ponds. The paths here are brilliant for that—properly signposted, with those little wooden gates that creak just right, leading through nature reserves buzzing with skylarks even in the downpour.

By the time I squelched back to the lodge, chilled to the bone but buzzing, the sun was peeking out again, painting rainbows over the reedbeds. I lit the wood burner, brewed a fresh pot (carefully this time), and sprawled on the sofa with a window seat view of the glistening fields. That first afternoon forced a gentle moment of reflection: here I was, miles from the rat race, at the mercy of Suffolk's fickle skies, and it felt utterly perfect. No grand adventures needed—just the rhythm of wind and waves, and the simple joy of a hot cuppa after getting properly drenched. Buttercup Lodge wasn't just a base; it was the heart of it all, perfectly placed for whatever the weather threw at you.

Day two dawned misty, teasing more coastal hikes, but that's a tale for soggy boots another time. First impressions sealed it: Suffolk's coast paths from this gem of a lodge are pure magic, rain or shine.
