About Suffolk
Bumble's Retreat is tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Bury St Edmunds, surrounded by those rolling fields that Suffolk does so well – you know, the ones with lazy cows chewing cud and the odd tractor chugging by. It's one of those shepherd's hut-style places, all wood and charm, with a veranda that screams "sit here with a cuppa and forget the world." My family's no strangers to cottage breaks, but this felt different from the off – more like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. We piled out of the car, kids already whooping about the hot tub they'd spotted in the pics, and me trying to dab at my coffee stain with a baby wipe while pretending I was composed. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The hut's compact but clever – step inside and you're hit with this warm, woody glow from the panelling, fairy lights twinkling already (cheers to whoever set those up), and a wood-burning stove begging to be lit. The kitchenette's a dinky dream: proper gas hob, a mini-fridge stocked with local milk (Suffolk cows, naturally), and those cute retro mugs that make tea taste better. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of Adnams – grabbed from a shop en route – toasting our arrival. The kids claimed the double bed at one end, me and the missus the sofa bed that unfolds into something surprisingly comfy. It's not massive, mind, which led to our first bit of lodge life chaos: little one's backpack exploding everywhere, burying the remote under a pile of crisps. "Mum, where's the telly?" she wails, while I'm faffing with the log basket, getting soot on my (still sticky) shirt. We ventured out for a mooch before it got dark – just a short stroll to the nearby lanes, where the air's thick with that countryside hush, broken only by rooks cawing overhead. Suffolk's got this magic at dusk, hasn't it? Hedgerows dripping with rain, a fox darting across the path – pure poetry without trying. Back at the hut, we fired up the barbecue on the veranda (rain be damned, we Brits are hardy), grilling sausages from the local butcher I'd nipped into earlier. The hot tub was bubbling away, steam rising like a proper treat, and the kids splashed in while I sipped wine, watching the sunset paint the fields pink. Simple pleasures, eh? No packed itineraries, just us lot messing about, laughing at the dog who kept trying to nick bangers off the tongs. That first evening, as the stove crackled and we played a daft game of Uno by lamplight – with the obligatory "you've got to be kidding me" draw-fours – I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life's been a whirlwind lately, rushing about like headless chickens. Here, in this tiny Suffolk haven, it all slowed right down. No emails pinging, no deadlines – just the rain pattering on the roof and family giggles echoing off the walls. Bumble's Retreat isn't flashy; it's got that gentle chaos of real life, like when the loo roll ran out mid-film and we had to MacGyver it with kitchen towel. But that's the joy of it. First impressions sealed it: this is our spot for proper relaxed family breaks. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but honestly, arriving was half the magic. |
