About Suffolk
I finally made it to Kessingland after what felt like the longest drive from Norwich, nursing a steaming cuppa in my thermos to fend off the Suffolk drizzle that had turned the A12 into a slick snake. It was meant to be a straightforward hour-and-a-half jaunt for my three-day getaway, but no, I managed to cock it up royally by taking a wrong turn near Lowestoft. Picture this: me, sat-nav abandoned because "I know these roads, love," ending up in a muddy farm track with a flock of bemused sheep staring me down like I'd gatecrashed their picnic. Fifteen minutes of reversing into a hedge later—complete with a branch ponging up the car like wet Labrador—I emerged, cheeks flushed, muttering about Suffolk's cheeky hidden lanes. Laughable now, but at the time, I was proper fuming, wondering if the holiday was jinxed before it started.

Pulling up to the 8 Bed Lodge just as the sun peeked through the clouds felt like a proper reward. Tucked away in this quiet corner of Kessingland, it's one of those big, welcoming timber lodges that scream family get-togethers or matey reunions—eight bedrooms, mind you, though it was just me rattling around like a lone pea in a pod. The key safe clicked open first go (thank heavens for small mercies), and stepping inside was like being hugged by a cosy auntie. The open-plan living space hit me straight away: massive leather sofas begging to be flopped on, a telly the size of a small car, and a kitchen that could feed an army. I dumped my bags and brewed a fresh pot of tea, proper builder's strength, while taking in the wood-beamed ceilings and those big windows framing the garden—nothing fancy, just neat lawns rolling out to a fenced play area with swings that squeaked invitingly in the breeze.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. The place smelled of fresh pine and that faint holiday tang of new upholstery, not a whiff of damp or neglect. I wandered the bedrooms—each with crisp white duvets piled high, en-suites gleaming like they'd never seen a muddy wellie. Mine overlooked the back, where I spotted a barbecue setup under a pergola, perfect for future evenings if the weather played ball. Downstairs, the dining area had this long oak table that screamed "crack open the wine," and I couldn't resist firing up the oven for a cheeky fish finger sarnie, using the well-stocked basics they'd left out. It was all so effortlessly practical—no faffing with dodgy plugs or missing remotes.

Stepping out the back door was the real kicker. The garden felt like a secret nook, private and peaceful, with the faint crash of waves from Kessingland Beach just a short stroll away—under a mile, easy peasy. I nipped down later that afternoon, past the dunes, and dipped my toes in the North Sea, giggling at how it bit back colder than a witch's tit. Back at the lodge, as the light faded, I plonked on the patio with a GandT, watching rabbits hop about. That arrival chaos melted away; here I was, in this cracking Suffolk hideaway, realising I'd been run ragged at work and needed this reset more than I thought. No grand adventures yet, just the simple joy of a cracking first night in, promising more. Can't wait for day two.
