About Suffolk
I’ll never forget the drive to that 3 Bed Lodge in Cretingham – a proper Suffolk jaunt that started with me taking a wrong turn near Framlingham and ending up in a muddy farm track, swearing at the sat-nav like it was my ex. Three days in Suffolk’s countryside, and I was already living the dream of getting gloriously lost. No grand plans, just me, a mate, and a vague notion of stumbling on hidden gems. That lodge? Absolute cracker for it – tucked away in Cretingham’s leafy folds, the sort of spot where you feel like you’ve nicked a slice of old England.

We arrived mid-afternoon, tyres crunching on the gravel drive after I’d finally extricated us from that daft detour. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. A cosy wooden lodge, all weathered beams and flower tubs spilling over with late-summer daisies, sat bang in the middle of fields that stretched to nowhere. No nosy neighbours, just birdsong and the distant low of cows. Unlocked the door with a key hidden under a flowerpot (proper trusting Suffolk style), and inside it was pure homely bliss: squishy sofas by a wood-burner, a kitchen kitted out with everything from cafetière to that rarest of gems, a proper teapot. Bedrooms upstairs were snug as a bug, with views over rolling paddocks. We dumped our bags, cracked open a couple of local Adnams ales from the offy in nearby Earl Soham, and thought, right, let’s see what secrets this place is hiding.

First wander was a belter – no maps, just following a footpath sign at the end of the garden that led into a wood I hadn’t even clocked on arrival. Turned out to be a proper hidden gem: an ancient copse with twisted oaks dripping in moss, sunlight dappling through like something out of a Tolkien tale. We got properly lost in there, bushwhacking along deer trails until we stumbled on a forgotten lily pond, alive with dragonflies and the plop of fish. Sat on a fallen log, feet dangling in the water, and it hit me – this is why you come to Suffolk. Not the tourist traps, but these accidental finds that make you feel like an explorer in your own backyard. Laughed our heads off when a pheasant burst out like a feathered alarm clock, nearly giving me a heart attack.

Next morning, bleary-eyed after too many ales, we veered off another unmarked lane from the lodge. Ended up at a tucked-away orchard just a couple of fields over – wild apples bowing the branches, free for the picking. Filled a carrier bag with bramleys the size of cricket balls, their tart crunch perfect for a makeshift crumble later. No signs, no fences, just pure, unspoiled Suffolk serendipity. That’s the joy of Cretingham – it’s off-the-beaten-track central. You think you’re heading for a pint at the local pub, but nope, you find a babbling brook with kingfishers darting about, or a wildflower meadow buzzing with bees. One wrong turn down a bridleway, and there we were, picnicking by a reed-fringed pond, watching otters play (or what I swear were otters; could’ve been very sleek rats, but let’s not ruin the magic).

By day two, I was hooked on the thrill of it. That gentle self-reflection moment came as I sat on the lodge’s veranda at dusk, pint in hand, watching mist roll in over the fens. Here I was, city lad turned accidental adventurer, realising how knackered I’d been from the daily grind. Getting lost isn’t daft – it’s the best therapy. No signals half the time, no distractions, just the quiet thrill of unearthing Suffolk’s secrets one muddy boot at a time. The lodge itself felt like the ultimate base camp for this lark: warm, welcoming, with a garden that whispered “wander off and see what’s out there.”

Those three days flew, but that first rush of arrival and those hidden discoveries? They’ve got me plotting a return. Suffolk’s got more gems buried in its hedges, and I’m itching to lose myself again.
