About Suffolk
By early afternoon, I'm trundling down a quiet lane just outside Stowmarket, sat-nav (miraculously) still alive, heart lifting as the Suffolk countryside unfolds – those endless golden fields dotted with the odd oak, and not a traffic jam in sight. The 2 Bed Lodge comes into view, tucked away in a peaceful spot that's got that perfect rural vibe without being cut off. It's a cosy two-bed cottage, the sort you'd dream of for a no-fuss getaway, with a gravel drive that crunched under my tyres like a welcoming handshake. I park up, stretch my legs, and there's this immediate sense of "ahh, this is it" – the kind of place that whispers 'relax' before you've even unlocked the door. Fumbling with the key safe (classic me, entering the code wrong twice because my fingers are still jittery from the charger drama), I step inside and whoosh – first impressions? Bloody brilliant. The living room's a hug in cottage form: beamed ceiling, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire later, and squishy sofas in muted greens that scream 'plonk yourself down'. Sunlight streams through the windows onto a farmhouse table big enough for lazy brekkies or a scribbled diary like this one. Kitchen's kitted out proper – Aga-style cooker, all the gadgets you need for a fry-up, and a larder stocked with tea towels that look homemade. I brew a cuppa straight away, black with two sugars, and perch on a stool, grinning like an idiot. The mishap on the road? Already fading into a daft anecdote. Upstairs, the bedrooms are gems. Our double's got a super-comfy bed piled with quilts, views over the garden where birds are chirping away, and that faint scent of lavender from the linens. The twin's just as inviting, perfect for mates or kids, with little touches like fluffy towels folded just so. The bathroom's a treat too – powerful shower that blasts away travel grime, and those posh eco-soaps that don't dry your skin out. Outside, the private patio's my new favourite spot: picnic bench, a bit of lawn for morning yoga (or, realistically, scrolling Insta), and it's all enclosed so you feel properly away from it all, yet minutes from Stowmarket's high street buzz. Wandering the garden, I spot apple trees heavy with fruit – tempted to nick one for a post-arrival snack. It's all so quintessentially Suffolk: unpretentious, green, and full of that gentle magic that makes you forget the M25 nightmares. As I unpack (chucking clothes into drawers like a pro), I have this quiet moment of self-reflection, sat on the patio with my dodgy new charger plugged in. Life's been a whirlwind lately – work deadlines, city stress – and here I am, mishaps and all, in this little lodge that's already working its charm. Why do I always need a cock-up to appreciate the simple stuff? Three days ahead feels like a gift now. First evening, I stroll five minutes to a local pub in Stowmarket for a pint of Adnams and fish 'n' chips – crispy batter, mushy peas, the works. Back at the lodge, stove crackling, feet up, I'm smitten. If arrival chaos is the worst of it, this Suffolk stay's going to be legendary. Can't wait for day two. |
