About Suffolk
I finally made it to Elmswell after a bit of a faff on the A14 – nothing major, just me spilling half my flask of tea all over the passenger seat about five miles out from Bury St Edmunds. Classic me, innit? Still, by early afternoon on that drizzly Suffolk Friday, I was pulling up to the 2 Bed Lodge, this cosy little timber-clad gem tucked away in a quiet spot just off the village road. First impressions? Proper welcoming, like the sort of place your nan would approve of. The key was waiting in a lockbox, and as I let myself in, the smell of fresh linen hit me straight away. Two bedrooms upstairs, a snug lounge with a wood burner (not lit yet, but promising), and a kitchen that screamed "get cooking, lad."

Right, priorities: food. I'd stocked up on the drive from the Co-op in Stowmarket, grabbing Suffolk ham, local cheddar, and a couple of those fat pork pies they do so well around here. But first, unpack and settle. The lodge felt just right – not flashy, but spot-on for a solo three-day escape. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of local ale from Adnams (snagged from the same shop), and fired up the oven for a hasty ham melt on granary bread. Blimey, that first bite, with the cheese bubbling and the ham all smoky? Pure bliss after the road rage. Sat by the window overlooking the garden, watching a couple of robins hop about, I thought, "This is it – proper downtime."

Evening called for the pub, naturally. Elmswell's got the Fox Inn just a short stagger down the lane – classic Suffolk boozer with low beams and a roaring fire. I propped up the bar, ordered a pint of Greene King IPA (it's Suffolk, what else?), and went for their pie of the day: steak and ale, encased in pastry thick enough to build a house with. Sides of mash and veg from nearby farms, no doubt. Chatted with the barman about local footy – Elmswell FC had a match coming up – and a few regulars who reckoned the lodge was "one of the best-kept spots in the village." Washed it down with sticky toffee pudding that was basically a hug in dessert form. Stumbled back under starry skies, full as a goog, and crashed out dreaming of breakfast.

Saturday morning, I was up with the lark (well, 9am), faffing in the kitchen like a wannabe MasterChef. The lodge's cooker is straightforward – gas hob, electric oven – so I attempted pancakes with bacon from the local butcher I'd spotted on the way in. Total disaster at first: first batch stuck like glue, which had me chuckling at my own incompetence. "You're 35, mate, and you can't flip a pancake?" But I nailed the next lot, drowned in maple syrup and crispy Suffolk bacon rashers. Brewed a pot of proper builder's tea, and ate at the little dining table, planning the day around more grub.

Lunch was a picnic from the village shop – ploughman's with pickled onions, crusty roll, and Branston pickle that zinged just right. Sat in the lodge garden (it's got a picnic bench, lovely), pondering how daft it is rushing through life back home when places like this exist. Gentle nudge to self: slow down, savour the simple stuff. Afternoon, I wandered to the Fox again for a light bite – fish finger sarnie elevated with tartare sauce made in-house. Pub grub here is unfussy but spot-on, always with that local twist.

Come evening, I pushed the boat out with a full-on cottage cook-up: sausages from Elmswell's butcher (juicy as anything), mash with gravy from a packet jazzed with stock, and runner beans I'd boiled to near-perfection. Paired with another Adnams, eaten by lamplight in the lounge. No telly needed – just the quiet hum of Suffolk life outside. First impressions of the lodge? It's the perfect base for this food-focused idyll, making every meal feel like a mini adventure. Can't wait to return and perfect that pancake flip.
