About Suffolk
I’ll never forget the drive to Waldringfield last autumn – that crisp October weekend when the Suffolk air starts whispering promises of woodsmoke and golden leaves. We’d piled into the car from Ipswich, bags stuffed with wellies and thermoses, aiming for our little 1 Bed Lodge, a cosy bolthole nestled right in the heart of the village. The journey was a dream at first: winding lanes flanked by hedgerows heavy with sloes and hips, the Deben estuary glinting like polished pewter under a sky that couldn’t decide between sun and shower. But then, classic me, I took a wrong turn onto a narrow track near the marina – nothing dramatic, just a daft five-minute detour through a puddle that splashed the windscreen like a comedy car wash. “Brilliant navigator,” my other half quipped, and we both cracked up as I U-turned, the radio belting out some folky tune about harvest moons.

Pulling up to the lodge around teatime, the seasonal magic hit us square on. Autumn in Suffolk is pure poetry – the sort that makes you glad you’ve swapped city chaos for this. The property sat tucked among ancient oaks, their leaves a riot of amber and rust, carpeting the ground in a crunchy quilt that rustled underfoot. It’s one of those classic timber lodges, all pitched roof and welcoming porch, with the river just a stone’s throw away. We unlocked the door to a waft of fresh linen and that faint, comforting scent of beeswax polish – no damp mustiness here, thank goodness, despite the season’s sneaky chills. The single bedroom was a snug haven: a proper double bed piled high with goose-down duvets and tartan blankets, perfect for burrowing into when the evenings draw in early. I flopped onto it immediately, sighing like I’d arrived home.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on for an autumn escape. The open-plan living space glowed in the soft light filtering through sash windows – imagine a wood-burning stove (already stocked with kindling, bless the hosts) crackling away as dusk fell, casting flickers on the exposed beams. We lit it pronto, the flames chasing off the damp that creeps in from the estuary mists. Outside, the patio overlooked a wild garden edging onto common land, where blackberries still clung to bushes, fat and jewel-like despite the frosts. I popped out for a handful while dinner simmered – mulled cider on the hob, using apples we’d nabbed from a honesty box down the lane. The air was alive with that earthy tang of decaying leaves mixed with salt from the Deben, and a lone heron stalked the mudflats below, silhouetted against the fading light.

Wandering the immediate surrounds that first evening shaped everything. Waldringfield’s marina was a five-minute stroll, its boats bobbing gently on the turning tide, moored rigging clinking like wind chimes in the breeze. Autumn paints the water silver-grey, with seals occasionally poking heads up – we spotted one, lazy and glossy, as the sun dipped behind Butley Oaks. No crowds, just dog-walkers in Barbours nodding hello, their spaniels flushing pheasants from the undergrowth. Back at the lodge, we supped tea on the porch, wrapped in blankets, watching mist roll in like a soft blanket over the fields. It felt timeless, this Suffolk autumn rhythm – harvest stubble glowing in the low light, the odd tractor chugging past with bales.

Sitting there, mug in hand, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life’s been a whirl lately – deadlines, decisions, the usual palaver. But here, in this unpretentious lodge, with the season stripping everything back to essentials, I felt properly grounded. No signal fussing about screens; just the simple joy of a firelit nook and nature’s yearly tidy-up. That insignificant splashy detour? It was the perfect opener to three days of proper unwinding. If you’re after a first-night-in heaven shaped by Suffolk’s golden autumn, this place delivers in spades. We were smitten from the off.
