About Norfolk
Pulling up to The Gables just before lunch, I was gobsmacked by how perfectly it embodied that autumnal Norfolk charm. Tucked down a quiet lane off the village green, this cosy stone cottage looked like it had been plucked from a Constable painting, with ivy clinging to the walls in fiery reds and the thatched roof glowing under a weak sun. The seasonal shift was everywhere – fallen leaves crunching underfoot as we unloaded the boot, and a faint woodsmoke scent wafting from nearby chimneys. It’s one of those proper Norfolk boltholes, just a stone’s throw from the marshes, where the flatlands stretch out endlessly, turning golden in the low light. Stepping inside for the first time was pure magic, especially with autumn wrapping everything in that soft, hazy glow. The sitting room welcomed us with a crackling log fire – we’d rung ahead to get it going, bless the hosts – and the warmth hit like a hug after the chilly drive. Plump sofas piled with cushions in earthy tones, and those big sash windows framing views of the garden, where apple trees were heavy with fruit, just begging to be picked. I nipped out straight away, basket in hand, filling it with windfalls that were tart and perfect for a crumble later. The kids thought it was brilliant, faces smeared with juice, while I had a quiet moment reflecting on how rare it is to feel so instantly at home. In the rush of daily life, I forget how grounding these simple, seasonal rituals are – plucking apples under an overcast sky, feeling the earth’s rhythm slow you down. The kitchen was a dream for autumn cooking, all beams and flagstone floors, with a Rayburn cooker that promised stews and soups for the cooler evenings ahead. We unpacked our veg box haul – Norfolk spuds, carrots straight from nearby fields, and pumpkins from a farm shop just down the road in Titchwell. First impressions? It screamed comfort food heaven. I rustled up a quick ploughman’s lunch with local cheddar and chutney, the kind of spread that tastes better because the season demands it. Outside, the garden patio was scattered with leaves, ideal for a cuppa while watching the light fade early – that short October day wrapping up by four, turning the sky into a watercolour of pinks and purples over the salt marshes. Wandering the garden path that first afternoon, with the wind whispering through the marram grass from the nearby beach at Holme-next-the-Sea, I couldn’t help but chuckle at myself. Here I was, city-bred me, marvelling at a wheelbarrow of logs like it was treasure. But honestly, arriving at The Gables in peak autumn felt like the universe’s gift – the season amplifying every detail, from the frosty dew on spiderwebs at dawn to the cosy glow of fairy lights we strung up by dusk. It’s made me promise myself more of these escapes, letting Norfolk’s autumn palette paint over the grey of routine. If you’re after a spot that captures the essence of the season without venturing far, this is it – pure, unpretentious bliss. |
