About Norfolk
Pulling up to the cottage just before teatime on that first Friday, I was chuffed to bits. Sybil Cottage is one of those proper Norfolk gems—cosy stone exterior tucked into a quiet spot near the beach, with a cheeky thatched roof that screams "traditional". The owner, a lovely chap called Mike, handed over the keys with a nod to the weather app: "Bit breezy tomorrow, mind." Understatement of the year, as it turned out. I dumped my bags, cracked open a tin of beans on toast in the compact kitchen (bliss after that drive), and stepped out for my first proper gander. The garden path led straight to dunes that whispered "walk me", and with the sun dipping low over the sea, how could I resist? Saturday morning dawned with that classic British tease—a glimpse of blue sky that had me lacing up my boots for a hike along Holme Dunes. I'd plotted a cracking route: a couple of miles looping through the nature reserve, past gorse bushes buzzing with bees and views of the Wash glittering like a spilled diamond. The air was crisp, the sand soft underfoot, and I felt like I'd stepped into a David Attenborough documentary. Birds wheeling overhead—oystercatchers, I reckon—and not a soul in sight. Pure magic. I even spotted a seal bobbing about offshore, which had me grinning like a kid. But Norfolk weather, eh? By noon, the clouds rolled in thicker than my nan's fruitcake, and the wind picked up, whipping sand into my face like nature's own exfoliator. Plans for a leisurely beach amble? Scrapped. Instead, I hunkered down back at the cottage, brewing a massive pot of tea and watching the squall lash the windows. Light humour in the mishap: I tried a "bracing walk" in the rain, lasted ten minutes before retreating, soaked to the skin, muttering about why I hadn't packed my wellies. Come Sunday, the weather played nice again—patchy sun with a chill bite that screamed "layer up". Energised, I set off for another jaunt, this time hugging the shoreline path towards Thornham Harbour, no more than a couple of miles out. The dunes gave way to shingle beaches strewn with seaweed and driftwood, perfect for pondering life's little nothings. The sea was a moody grey, waves crashing with that rhythmic roar that drowns out worries. Halfway along, the heavens opened once more—proper Norfolk deluge, turning the path into a muddy slip 'n' slide. I sheltered under a scrubby bush, laughing at my sodden trainers, thinking how these weather whims are what make a holiday here. No five-star predictability; just you, the elements, and a good story to tell. Back at Sybil Cottage by early afternoon, dripping but content, I reflected gently over a cuppa by the wood burner. Three days in, and I'd barely scratched the surface—hikes interrupted, plans pivoted, but that's the joy of it. In the rush of city life, I forget how these wild walks, rain and all, reset the soul. Norfolk's got me hooked; I'll be back for more of its unpredictable charm. |
