About Norfolk
I’ll never forget the drive to Sybil Cottage last weekend – a proper Norfolk jaunt that started with the usual M11 crawl, but then turned into one of those gloriously empty A-roads stretching out towards the coast. We’d packed the car with enough crisps and ginger beer to see us through a siege, the kids buzzing in the back about building sandcastles at Holme beach, just a stone’s throw away. Me and the wife were dead chuffed for a three-day breather from the daily grind – no grand plans, just proper family downtime in this wee corner of west Norfolk. That was, until I took a wrong turn near Hunstanton and ended up in a muddy farm lane, the SatNav chirping away like it was auditioning for a comedy sketch. “Recalculating,” it said, as I reversed into a puddle the size of a small pond. The kids howled with laughter, dubbing me Captain Mudflap on the spot. Classic me – always the hero of my own minor disasters.

By the time we trundled into Holme-next-the-Sea, the sun was dipping low, painting the sky in that big, Norfolk-skyscape pink. Sybil Cottage (4) sits right in the heart of the village, one of those chocolate-boxy spots that look like they’ve been plucked from a postcard. It’s a cosy little semi-detached number, all whitewashed walls and a pitched roof that screams “traditional seaside bolthole.” We parked up on the roadside – no faffing with gates or drives here – and hauled our bags the few steps to the front door. The key turned smooth as you like, and blimey, stepping inside felt like sinking into a favourite armchair.

First impressions? Pure, unadulterated charm. The living room’s the star – beams overhead, a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (we got one going later, naturally), and those big windows framing the quiet lane outside. It’s got that lived-in vibe without tipping into tatty; tartan cushions on the sofa, a telly tucked away in the corner for rainy days, and a coffee table scattered with board games. Perfect for our lot – the little ones immediately commandeered the spot for a chaotic game of Snap, cards flying everywhere. I plonked down with a cuppa, taking it all in, and couldn’t help a quiet chuckle at how this place just wraps you up. No bling, no gadgets – just simple lodge life, the kind that makes you forget the world’s gone potty.

Wandering through, the kitchen’s a belter: compact but kitted out proper, with an electric cooker, microwave, and a fridge that hummed contentedly as we stuffed it with our holiday haul. Washing machine in the utility porch? Tick – because let’s face it, sandy beach towels don’t wash themselves. Up the creaky stairs (another tick for character), two bedrooms awaited: the main with a kingsize bed that looked like a cloud, and a twin for the kids, both with those gorgeous sloping ceilings that make you duck if you’re my height. The bathroom’s compact, shower over the bath, but spotless and inviting after our muddy escapade.

We cracked open the windows to that fresh sea air – Holme’s right on your doorstep, with its dunes and nature reserve just a stroll away for a proper beach ramble. No need to drive; it’s all here for lazy wanders. Sat there that first evening, munching fish finger butties (posh holiday fare), listening to the distant waves, I had one of those moments. You know, the gentle nudge where you realise life’s not about the big wins, but these pockets of nothing-much – family squabbles over the last biscuit, the stove’s crackle, the promise of sand between toes tomorrow. Sybil Cottage nailed it from the off: relaxed, real, and just chaotic enough to feel like home. Can’t wait to go back.
