About Norfolk
First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Nestled in this quiet corner of west Norfolk, Sherbet Cottage is the sort of place that makes you exhale and think, "Right, this is it." I dumped my bags in the snug living room—wood burner at the ready, though it was a balmy August afternoon—and stepped straight out the back door for my inaugural wander. The plan was simple: three days of proper Norfolk hikes, letting the flatlands and breezes do their magic. No grand itineraries, just boots on, map in pocket (well, phone, if I'm honest), and off I went. Day one kicked off with a cracking loop around South Creake itself. The weather was playing nice—bright blue skies, a gentle breeze rustling the barley fields. I followed the footpaths past the old church, its wonky tower leaning like it's had one too many at the pub, and out towards the River Burn. It's all so quintessentially Norfolk: big skies that make you feel tiny, hedges dripping with blackberries (I may have sampled a few), and not a soul in sight. The cottage faded behind me like a postcard, and I proper lost myself in the rhythm of it—crunch of gravel underfoot, skylarks twittering overhead. By teatime, I was back, cheeks pink from the fresh air, brewing a cuppa in the cottage's spotless kitchen. First impression sealed: this place was made for ambling. But oh, the British weather—it's got a wicked sense of humour, hasn't it? Come morning two, I eyed up a longer hike towards the neighbouring hamlets, maybe a meander to North Creake and back via the lanes. The forecast promised "partly cloudy," which we all know is code for "brace yourselves." Sure enough, as I laced up outside Sherbet Cottage, the heavens opened. Not a drizzle, mind—a full-on Norfolk deluge, turning the paths to slick mud and my enthusiasm to mild panic. I dashed back in, laughing at the sodden state of my trousers, and pivoted to the cosiest plan B: pacing the garden paths under a brolly, dodging raindrops like a daft game of hopscotch. The cottage's porch became my command centre—sipping tea, watching the downpour lash the lavender. It was unexpectedly brilliant, that forced pause letting me soak in the details: the way the rain beaded on the roses, the earthy petrichor scent mingling with woodsmoke from a neighbour's chimney. By afternoon, the clouds cracked open like a bad mood lifting, and out I popped for a stealthy evening stroll. The sun slanted gold over the fields, steam rising from the puddles—pure magic. I stuck close, looping the local byways within a couple of miles, past flint cottages and lazy sheep eyeing me suspiciously. Back at Sherbet Cottage as dusk fell, I lit that wood burner, feet up, and reflected gently: how often do we bulldoze through life without these weather-whipped detours? That mishap pheasant, the rain's cheeky interruption—it all conspired to make the simplest walks feel profound. Norfolk's got a way of slowing you down, and Sherbet Cottage? It's the perfect base for it. If you're after big skies, bigger breezes, and a spot of self-discovery via soggy boots, book it. You won't regret a step. |
