About Norfolk
Piper Cottage is a proper gem, tucked away in this quiet corner of north Norfolk, right by the beach. It's one of those dog-friendly stone cottages with a thatched roof that screams "cosy hideaway." I stepped inside, dropped my bags, and was hit by that instant holiday bliss—low beams, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit, and a kitchen window framing the dunes. First impressions? Spot on. It's compact but perfect for solo wanderings or a couple's escape, with a comfy king-size bed upstairs and a garden that backs straight onto the coastal path. No faffing with check-in; the key was in a lockbox, and a welcome pack of local biscuits and milk waited like an old mate. Day one was all about settling in with a gentle hike. The weather was playing nice—crisp autumn blue skies, a light breeze off the North Sea. I laced up my boots and headed out the back gate onto the Norfolk Coast Path. It's flat bliss here, no steep climbs, just endless sandy beaches and marram grass whispering in the wind. I wandered towards Holme Dunes National Nature Reserve, about a mile along, spotting seals bobbing offshore and little egrets stabbing at rock pools. The path meanders through pinewoods and shingle, with views that make you forget the world. I must've clocked five miles round trip, stopping for a brew on a driftwood log, feeling that proper Norfolk peace wash over me. First impressions of the area? Wild, open, and utterly addictive. Come evening, I lit the stove, cracked open a tin of local crab from the beach café (they do cracking crab sandwiches there), and planned tomorrow's adventure. But oh, British weather—never trust it further than you can throw it. Day two dawned with a vengeance: horizontal rain lashing the windows, wind howling like a banshee. My grand plan for a full circuit to Thornham (too far, mind, I wasn't daft) was scuppered. Instead, I adapted like a true Brit—layered up in every waterproof going and hit the beach anyway. The sea was frothing, waves crashing dramatically, turning the walk into a proper adventure. I stuck close, battling the gusts along the shore path, laughing as sand blasted my cheeks. It was exhilarating, that raw edge where sky meets sea. Spot of humour: I tried a selfie, only for the wind to nearly whip my hat into the drink. Retrieved it, dripping and sandy, feeling like a drowned rat but alive. By afternoon, the rain eased to a drizzle, so I looped back through the dunes, marvelling at how the light shifted—moody greys to golden patches. Piper Cottage became my haven: drying socks by the radiator, a hot cuppa, and that self-reflective moment staring out at the stormy horizon. Holidays like this remind you life's not about grand plans, but rolling with the squalls. It's the little things—the changing weather shaping your stride, the cottage wrapping you in warmth—that make Norfolk magic. Day three brought a cheeky mix: morning mist burning off into sunshine, perfect for one last hike along the beach to the golf course edge. Seals again, plus a cheeky rabbit darting across the path. Weather wins and losses, but Piper Cottage? First impressions sealed it as my new favourite bolt-hole. If you're after walks that shift with the skies, this is your spot. I'm already plotting a return. |
