About Norfolk
I’ll never forget the drive to Perrystone Cottage in Burnham Market—it was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from King’s Lynn, but no, I managed to take a wrong turn onto some nameless lane that looked promising on the satnav but led straight into a muddy farm track. There I was, city slicker that I am, with my little hatchback half-stuck in Norfolk’s finest gloopy soil, swearing under my breath while a pair of bemused cows chewed the cud and stared. A local farmer in a flat cap towed me out with his tractor in under five minutes, chuckling about “townies and their gadgets.” Lesson learned: in Norfolk, trust the signs, not the screens. Scraped off the mud, and twenty minutes later, I was pulling up to Perrystone Cottage, heart still thumping from my accidental detour.

First impressions? Blimey, what a gem. Tucked away on a quiet lane just off the village centre, it’s the sort of place you stumble upon by sheer luck—or navigational idiocy, in my case. The cottage is all honeyed stone and thatched roof, with roses clambering over the doorway like they’ve got nothing better to do. I let myself in with the key under the flowerpot (proper trusting Norfolk hospitality), and stepped into a cosy hug of a living room: low beams you have to duck under (I’ve got the bruise to prove it), a wood burner begging for a fire, and mismatched armchairs that scream “put your feet up.” The kitchen’s a dream for lazy cooks—everything within arm’s reach, including a retro Aga that I immediately vowed to master. Upstairs, the bedrooms are snug as a bug, with views over the garden that’s basically a wildflower meadow pretending to be tamed.

But honestly, the real magic hit me as I unpacked and realised I’d arrived slap bang in hidden Norfolk territory. Burnham Market’s got its posh Georgian square and deli full of artisanal cheeses, but I wasn’t here for the high street hustle. No, my three days were all about those off-the-beaten-track delights you only find by getting gloriously lost. That first afternoon, shaking off the drive, I wandered out the back gate onto a footpath I hadn’t even noticed on arrival. It meandered through reed-fringed marshes, the sort of spot where the sky feels bigger than it should. No tourists, just skylarks trilling overhead and the squelch of mud under my wellies (pro tip: pack them). I stumbled—quite literally—onto a tiny creek hidden behind a copse of hawthorn, where seals bobbed about like they owned the place. Seals! In Burnham Deepdale, not half a mile from the cottage as the crow flies. I sat on a driftwood log for an hour, munching a pasty from the village shop, feeling like I’d gatecrashed nature’s private party.

The next morning, fueled by the cottage’s Nespresso pod mountain, I struck out again, this time veering left instead of right from the front door. Another accidental gem: a forgotten smugglers’ path snaking towards Brancaster Staithe, lined with samphire you could pick if you weren’t as clumsy as me. Ended up at a pebbly beach cove that doesn’t even have a name on the map—waves lapping at razor shells, empty save for a lone fisherman sorting his crab pots. Laughed out loud when a gust whipped my hat into the North Sea; chased it like a fool before giving up and embracing the windswept look. Lunch was fish and chips from a shack I’d never have found without getting turned around—crispiest batter ever, eaten on a bench overlooking the creeks.

By day three, I’d mapped my own mental atlas of these secret spots, all within a gentle stroll or cycle from Perrystone. One evening, pedalling back muddy-tyred from a hidden woodland glade near Burnham Overy (did I mention the bluebells? Out of season, but still enchanting), I paused in the cottage garden, pint of Adnams in hand, watching the sunset paint the marshes pink. That’s when it hit me, a quiet moment of self-reflection amid the laughter: we chase far-flung adventures, but the best holidays are these serendipitous wanders, where getting lost unearths the soul of a place. Perrystone Cottage isn’t just a stay; it’s a launchpad for Norfolk’s whispered wonders. If you fancy ditching the map and discovering your own, book it—you won’t regret the mud.
