About Norfolk
By early afternoon, we trundled up the drive to Oxburgh, this cosy little lodge tucked away in the heart of King's Lynn and West Norfolk district. It's one of those spots that screams "Norfolk idyll" – surrounded by lush meadows and not a whiff of city stress. The property's right on the doorstep of Oxburgh village, with its postcard-pretty church and the faint outline of Oxburgh Hall peeking through the trees. We parked on the gravel crunch, unloaded the boot in a flurry of wellies and carrier bags stuffed with crisps and ginger beer, and there it was: our home for three days. A proper chocolate-box cottage, all low beams and flower baskets dripping with lobelia. First impressions? Pure bliss. The door creaked open to reveal a lounge that wrapped you up like a hug – squishy sofas, a wood-burner begging for logs, and those massive windows framing views of rolling fields where sheep dotted about like fluffy commas. We dumped the bags and did the classic family recce. Kitchen was a dream for lazy cooks like me: Aga humming away, stocked with local tea towels and a jug of fresh milk from some nearby farm. Upstairs, the bedrooms were snug as a bug – ours with a superking that could sleep a rugby team, and the boys' room crammed with bunks that had them whooping like pirates claiming treasure. "This is better than our house!" one declared, already plotting bunk-bed fortresses. Light chaos ensued as we unpacked: socks flying, someone spilling Ribena on the rug (sorry, owners), but it was that brilliant lodge-life mayhem that makes these breaks magical. No schedules, just us faffing about, cracking open windows to let in the breeze carrying hints of wild mint from the garden. Stepping outside was the real kicker. The garden's a wildish haven – apple trees heavy with fruit, a patio with chairs that practically begged for cups of tea, and paths leading to pockets of woodland alive with birdsong. We wandered the grounds, kicking through leaves, spotting a fox scarper into the undergrowth. It's so quintessentially Norfolk here: quiet lanes lined with hawthorn hedges, the air crisp and peaty, and that sense of space that city folk like us crave. First evening, we fired up the BBQ (propane, thank god – no faffing with charcoal in the wind), grilling sausages from the local butcher in Oxburgh village, just a stroll away. Sat there as the sun dipped low over the marshes, painting everything pink and gold, plates balanced on knees, boys daubed in ketchup. Laughter echoed as stories of the pheasant incident got embellished with each retelling. Mind you, it wasn't all postcard perfect. I had a proper dad moment tripping over a garden gnome in the dusk – flat on my arse, drawing roars from the family. Lying there amid the daisies, staring at the starry sky (Norfolk's light pollution is non-existent), I had a wee reflection. These rushed weekends away, with their minor disasters and simple joys – the shared giggles, the nothing-much chats – they're what recharge the batteries. Oxburgh nailed that vibe from the off: no grand plans needed, just us, a cracking cottage, and the gentle hum of countryside life. Can't wait to return and make more memories. |
