About Norfolk
Pulling up to Old Mill House around teatime on that golden Friday evening, I was knackered but buzzing. The cottage sits in a quiet nook just off the Brancaster lanes, surrounded by those classic Norfolk flint walls and hollyhocks nodding in the breeze. It's one of those proper chocolate-box jobbies—low-beamed ceilings, a thatched roof that looks like it's been there since the Tudors, and a front garden bursting with lavender that hit me with the most heavenly scent as I lugged my bags up the path. The key turned smoothly in the lock (thank God, no more chaos), and stepping inside was like tumbling into a hug from an old mate. The living room hit me first—cosy as anything, with a wood-burning stove begging for a fire (I resisted, it was still balmy out), squashy sofas in muted blues, and a telly above the mantel that promised lazy evenings with Strictly reruns. The kitchen was a dream for a solo traveller like me: flagstone floors, a Rayburn cooker gleaming invitingly, and all the mod cons hidden behind Shaker-style cupboards— Nespresso machine, anyone? I cracked open a bottle of Norfolk cider I'd picked up en route (from Heacham, miles away? Nah, local as), and rustled up some cheese on toast while peering out the window at the mill pond glinting in the sunset. Peaceful doesn't cover it; it was that rare kind of quiet where you can hear the waves crashing faintly from Brancaster beach, not half a mile off. Wandering upstairs, I found the king-size bed in the main room, piled high with duck-down duvets and views over the garden—pure bliss after my road rage episode. The en-suite was spotless, with a rainfall shower that I tested immediately, washing away the day's grit while steam fogged the mirror. There's even a twin room for mates or kids, all crisp linen and charm. But the real magic? That private hot tub out the back, tucked under a pergola with fairy lights strung up. I slipped in as dusk fell, bubbles churning, sipping my cider and watching bats flit about. The stars popped out sharper than I've seen in years—no light pollution here—and I had a proper moment of self-reflection, bubbles up to my chin. Here I was, mid-forties singleton, faffing through life like that sat-nav, but in this spot, everything slowed. Norfolk has that knack, doesn't it? Stripping away the bollocks, leaving just you, a hot tub, and the Broads whispering in the distance. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. The chaos of arrival melted into this warm glow of "yes, this is exactly what I needed." Old Mill House isn't some soulless holiday let; it's got soul—dog-friendly too, though I left mine at home this time. If you're after a base for bracing beach walks to Brancaster Staithe or birdwatching at the nearby scrapes, it's perfect. Three days here, and day one already felt like a reset. Can't wait to explore more tomorrow. |
