About Norfolk
Stepping through the door was pure magic. The place is a proper hug of a holiday home—compact, characterful, with low-beamed ceilings and a wood-burner that promised evenings of crackling warmth, even if it was a balmy summer weekend. I dumped my bag in the bedroom, where the king-size bed looked so inviting I nearly had a lie-down on the spot. First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. The kitchen was kitted out just right for lazy self-catering: a proper Aga humming away, fresh herbs on the windowsill, and a fridge stocked with local milk from a farm down the road. I cracked open a bottle of Norfolk cider I'd picked up en route and just stood there, soaking it in. The garden stole my heart straight off. Enclosed and private, with a lush lawn dotted with pots of lavender and roses, it backed onto dunes that led right to the beach. I flopped into one of the wooden chairs with my book—a battered copy of Moominvalley adventures, perfect for switching off—and watched butterflies flit about. No itinerary, no rush. Just the joy of doing bugger all, really. The sun filtered through the leaves, and the distant crash of waves was my soundtrack. I reckon I spent a good hour there before wandering out to the garden's edge, peering over at the sandy path to Holme Beach. It's wild and unspoiled, that stretch—just shells, seaweed, and the odd dog-walker. I ambled down for a nose, barefoot in the cool sand, collecting a few razor shells as souvenirs. No swimming that first afternoon; I was too busy savouring the slowness. Back at the cottage, I pottered about like I owned the place. Brewed a pot of tea (carefully this time), sliced some crusty bread with cheese from the nearby deli in Thornham—only a couple of miles up the road—and settled on the sofa with the window flung wide. The air smelled of salt and gorse. Light humour in the air too: I tried lighting the barbecue in the garden, only to realise I'd forgotten the matches. Laughed at myself, gave up, and opted for a simple salad instead. Sat there as the sun dipped, painting the sky in pinks and oranges, feeling properly content. That first evening, as I lit a few candles and flicked on the fairy lights strung around the patio, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life back home is a whirlwind—deadlines, emails, the lot. Here, at Miramare, time stretched out like the horizon. I realised how rarely I let myself just be, without the need to achieve or explore or Instagram every second. It's the little things that recharge you: the creak of the floorboards, the rustle of pages turning, the gentle nudge to slow down. By bedtime, snuggled under the duck-down duvet with the sea murmuring outside, I was already plotting a second cuppa in the garden come morning. This cottage isn't about grand adventures; it's about reclaiming the art of lingering, and boy, did my first impressions hit that spot bang on. |
