About Norfolk
I finally made it to Norfolk after what felt like the world's slowest drive from Cambridge, nursing a flat tyre warning light that turned out to be nothing more than a dodgy sensor playing up. Typical me – packing the car like a Tetris pro with kids' toys, wellies, and enough crisps to siege a castle, only for the sat-nav to reroute us through every sleepy village en route to Dereham. By the time we trundled down the narrow lane to Mead Three, the sun was dipping low over the Breckland fields, painting everything in that golden Norfolk glow that makes you forget the M11 crawl.

Pulling up to the lodge, I couldn't help but grin. There it was, this cosy little timber haven tucked into a quiet holiday park, all wood cladding and pitched roof, looking like it had been plucked straight from a storybook about lazy countryside escapes. We'd booked it for a proper family unwind – me, the wife, and our two under-tens – and from the off, it screamed 'relaxed chaos ahead'. The kids piled out before I'd even turned off the engine, whooping at the sight of the private hot tub bubbling away on the deck like a posh outdoor jacuzzi. "Can we jump in now, Dad?" yells little Ollie, aged seven, already knee-deep in imaginings of cannonballs. I laughed, hauling bags from the boot, thinking, blimey, we've not even unlocked the door yet.

Stepping inside was pure hygge bliss, Norfolk-style. The open-plan living space hit you first – squishy sofas in muted greens, a telly begging for kids' cartoons, and a kitchenette kitted out with everything from cafetière to toaster. I flicked on the kettle for a much-needed brew while the family explored. "Mum, there's a dishwasher!" squealed Evie, our nine-year-old budding chef, as if we'd landed in the Ritz. The wooden floors creaked underfoot in that reassuring way, and big windows framed views of whispering pines and distant meadows – no roaring traffic, just birdsong and the odd pheasant strutting about like it owned the place. It felt instantly like home, but better: no laundry piles or school runs lurking.

First impressions? Spot on for lodge life. We cracked open a bottle of fizz (non-alcoholic for the nippers) and fired up the barbecue on the private patio – nothing fancy, just sausages from the local Spar in Dereham that we'd grabbed en route, sizzling away as the evening cooled. The hot tub became command central; the kids splashed about in their cossies, turning prune-fingered and giddy, while we parents sank in up to our necks, steam rising like a foggy morning on the Broads. Chaos ensued when Ollie declared it a 'shark attack zone', dousing us all in tidal waves. I emerged dripping, towel-whipping the air in mock retaliation, proper daft family larks that had us in stitches.

As the stars popped out – Norfolk skies do them proud, miles from light pollution – I sat on the deck with a cuppa, listening to the quiet hum of the park. The lodges dotted around were low-key, spaced out enough for privacy, with play areas nearby that promised morning swings and slides. No grand adventures planned yet, just this: simple pleasures like the scent of pine sap, the kids' laughter echoing off the trees, and that hot tub gurgle lulling us into holiday mode. Made me reflect, sipping my tea in the chill – we're all rushing about life like headless chickens, aren't we? Here at Mead Three, on day one, it hit me: sometimes the best reset is just arriving, letting the little stuff – a bubbly tub, bangers on the barbie, family mayhem – wash away the week's grit. Three days in Norfolk? Off to a cracking start.
