About Norfolk
By the time I trundled up the drive to Mannington Premier around lunchtime, I was frazzled, covered in crisp crumbs from a hasty service station lunch, and swearing I'd never mock Norfolk's "big sky" reputation again after staring at it for hours. The property loomed into view like a hug from a well-heeled auntie – a sprawling, Premier-grade cottage that screamed luxury without the pretension. Set in that quintessentially Norfolk spot, just a stone's throw from the dunes and the Wash, it was all honeyed stone walls, manicured lawns, and those big sash windows promising views of marshy fields stretching to the horizon. I parked on the gravel (crunching satisfyingly under the tyres), grabbed my bags, and fumbled for the key safe code, hands still shaking from the goose apocalypse. Pushing open the door was like stepping into a Rayburn-warmed embrace. The hallway alone had me grinning – flagstone floors, a boot rack begging for wellies (which I'd wisely packed), and the faint scent of fresh linen and wood polish. I dumped my stuff and wandered into the kitchen, which was an absolute dream: a massive oak table that could seat a small wedding party, a double Aga humming away like it was born to roast Norfolk turkey, and gadgets gleaming under spotlights. I brewed a cuppa straight away – proper builder's tea from the welcome basket stocked with local biscuits and a bottle of wine. Cheeky, that. Sipping it by the window, I clocked the garden stretching out, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and a wood-fired hot tub lurking invitingly at the far end. "This," I thought, "is why we do holidays." Upstairs, the bedrooms were crackers – mine had a king-sized bed piled high with duck-down pillows, views over the paddock where a couple of horses were grazing lazily, and an en-suite that made my tiny flat bathroom weep with envy. The light poured in, turning everything golden, and I flopped onto the bed for a moment, staring at the beams overhead. That's when the gentle reflection hit me: here I was, mid-30s singleton, always rushing through life like those geese had somewhere to be, and this place was forcing me to pause. No emails pinging, no deadlines – just the soft Norfolk light and a profound sense of "alright, this'll do nicely." First impressions? Blown away. The chaos of arrival melted faster than a Flake in the sun. I spent the afternoon pottering – firing up the hot tub (pure bliss after the drive), nibbling those biccies while flicking through a guide to nearby Hunstanton beach (a quick hop away for tomorrow's rockpool rummage), and just soaking in the peace. Dinner was a simple affair: local sausages from the welcome pack, fried up on the hob with a cheeky glass of that wine. As the sun dipped low over the flats, painting the sky in pinks and oranges, I raised a toast to Mannington Premier. Messy start or not, this was already shaping up to be the perfect Norfolk bolthole. Can't wait to see what day two brings. |
