About Norfolk
Stepping inside felt like sinking into a warm hug. The open-plan living space is all about comfort – plush sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging to be lit (though it was a balmy June day, so I held off), and a kitchen kitted out with everything you'd need for lazy self-catering. I dumped my bags, cracked open a cold cider from the fridge (they'd stocked the basics, bless 'em), and just... exhaled. After months of city hustle, the joy of doing bugger all hit me like a tonic. No itinerary, no alarms – just me, a stack of dog-eared paperbacks, and the gentle hum of the countryside outside. The garden was the real star of those first impressions. Enclosed and private, it's a riot of wildflowers and herbs, with a couple of loungers positioned just so for maximum gazing-at-nothing potential. I spent my first afternoon sprawled there, book forgotten on my lap, watching clouds drift over the Titchwell Marsh reserve. The RSPB visitor centre is a stone's throw away – literally five minutes' wander – and even from the garden, you could hear the curlews calling and glimpse waders picking through the salt marshes. It's that quintessentially Norfolk scene: vast, flat expanses meeting the sky, with the sea whispering in the distance. I pottered down to the beach path later that evening, trainers sinking into the sandy tracks, and stood there as the sun dipped low, painting everything pink. No rushing back for dinner reservations; I ambled home to fry up some local sausages I'd grabbed from the nearby farm shop en route. Day two dawned lazy as you like, with mist rolling in off the Wash. I brewed a pot of tea strong enough to stand the spoon in, and claimed the window seat with a view straight out to the reed beds. Reading turned into nodding off, which turned into more reading – some P.G. Wodehouse for the chuckles, because why not? The lodge's vibe is all about slowing right down; it's dog-friendly too, though I was solo this trip, so the only furry companion was the imaginary one in my head begging for walks I was too comfy to take. Lunch was a no-cook affair: cheese, crackers, and whatever ripe tomatoes were rolling around in my bag, eaten al fresco while butterflies danced about. I did muster the energy for a gentle explore around Titchwell's lanes – past thatched cottages and the odd tractor chugging by – popping into the nature reserve's hides to spy avocets and godwits through borrowed binoculars. It's proper Norfolk magic, that quiet wildlife drama unfolding without you lifting a finger. By the third morning, as I sipped coffee on the decking, watching a hare hop across the marsh, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Here I was, a Londoner who'd spent years chasing deadlines, suddenly content with the art of idling. No photos for Instagram, no grand adventures – just the simple joy of a cosy lodge, a blooming garden, and time stretching out like the horizon. In Focus isn't about doing; it's about being. Those first impressions linged through every unhurried hour, reminding me that sometimes, the best holiday is the one where you do sod all and love every minute. If you're after that, book it – you won't regret arriving fashionably late like I did. |
