About Norfolk
Pulling up to the lodge around lunchtime felt like slipping into a cosy hug. Tucked away in a quiet spot just off the village, it's one of those classic Norfolk holiday lets—stone-built, low-roofed, with a thatched vibe that screams "proper countryside escape." Old Hunstanton’s got that unpretentious charm, all windswept dunes and salty air, and the lodge is right in the thick of it, a stone's throw from the beach. We parked on the gravel drive, crunching under the tyres, and unloaded the boot amid excited squeals from the little ones. The front door key was in the lockbox, as promised, and stepping inside? Blimey, instant holiday mode. The living room hit me first—compact but spot-on for a family of four. A wood-burning stove squatted in the corner, begging for a fire later (though with the August sun blazing, we didn't need it), and squishy sofas faced a telly mounted above a shelf of board games and dog-eared paperbacks. The kids immediately commandeered the coffee table for their Lego explosion, bricks flying everywhere like shrapnel. I chuckled, thinking how this place was made for lodge life chaos—none of your sterile hotel nonsense, just lived-in warmth. Kitchen next door was a gem: granite worktops, a proper Aga humming away, and a fridge stocked with local milk and eggs from the owners' welcome pack. I cracked open a bottle of Norfolk cider they'd left (cheers for that touch), and we rustled up cheese toasties while peering out at the enclosed garden. It's tiny but perfect—patio table, a couple of loungers, and lavender bushes buzzing with bees. The boy tried to "hunt" them with a stick, earning a mild telling-off and a bag of Haribo to distract him. Upstairs, the bedrooms were snug as a bug. Our double had a window framing the rooftops and a glimpse of the sea—nothing fancy, but that fresh sea breeze fluttering the curtains made it feel like luxury. The kids' room had bunk beds they scaled like monkeys before we'd even unpacked, giggling about who’d get the top. Bathroom was compact, with a powerful shower that steamed up the mirror for foggy faces—proper fun for drawing on. First impressions? This lodge nails the simple pleasures. We wandered down to Old Hunstanton beach five minutes later, buckets in hand for sandcastles, the sun dipping low over the Wash. Seagulls squawking, waves lapping lazily—pure Norfolk magic. Back for tea, we barbecued sausages on the patio (smoke billowing everywhere, naturally), then sprawled on the sofa with fish and chips from the chippy up the road. The telly flickered with some rubbish quiz show, but no one cared; it was all about that easy rhythm. Sitting there later, pint in hand, watching the kids conk out mid-game of Uno, I had a quiet moment of reflection. Life's mad rush back home—work emails, school runs—feels miles away already. Here at Hungate, it's just us, the sea, and a bit of joyful disorder. Can't wait to wake up to those dunes tomorrow. This is what family breaks are meant to be. |
