About Norfolk
I finally made it to Houghton in Norfolk after what felt like the world's most disorganised road trip. Picture this: me, armed with a boot full of hastily packed crisps, a dodgy sat-nav, and high hopes for a chilled three-day cottage escape. But no, the universe had other plans. About ten miles out from King's Lynn, my ancient Fiesta decides to throw a proper wobbly – the windscreen wipers start flailing like they're auditioning for a rave, right in the middle of a biblical downpour. Norfolk's famous big skies? Yeah, they were doing their moody grey thing, tipping buckets on me just as I was trying to decipher a faded signpost. I pulled over near the A148, soaked to the skin, swearing under my breath while faffing with fuses that looked older than the county itself. Twenty minutes and a lot of YouTube diagnostics later (signal was rubbish, naturally), I got her going again. Lesson one: never trust a car that's seen more MOTs than birthdays.

By the time I trundled into Houghton proper, I was late, frazzled, and questioning my life choices. The village is this tucked-away gem, all honey-stone cottages and whispering reed beds, just a stone's throw from the Hall's estate – you know, that posh pile with its Capability Brown gardens that make you feel underdressed even in wellies. Snaking down the narrow lane to the cottage, past the old church spire poking through the mist, I nearly missed the turning. The place is called Houghton – dead simple name, spot-on location – a cosy two-up-two-down straight out of a Sunday night drama, with ivy climbing the walls and a front garden bursting with hollyhocks despite the drizzle.

Stumbling through the door with my dripping bags, I was hit by the kind of first impression that makes you forgive any pre-arrival chaos. The sitting room? Pure bliss. A wood-burner already laid with kindling, squashy sofas in that lived-in tartan, and a telly bigger than my flat's kitchen. I dumped my stuff and cracked open the welcome pack – local apple juice, shortbread from a nearby farm shop, and a cheeky bottle of Norfolk cider that whispered "pour me now." Chuckling to myself, I thought, "Well, if the wiper fiasco was the low point, this is winning already." The kitchen was a dream for a solo faffer like me: Aga humming away, fresh herbs on the windowsill overlooking the paddock, and every drawer stuffed with proper kit – no flimsy tourist tat here.

Wandering upstairs, the bedrooms wrapped me in that fluffy-towel hug you crave after a mishap. Crisp cotton sheets, views straight across to the woods where pheasants were no doubt plotting their next strut, and a bathroom that smelled of lavender rather than damp (praise be). I flopped on the bed, staring at the beams overhead, and had one of those gentle moments – you know, when you realise how daft it is to stress over punctuality when paradise is waiting. Why rush when Norfolk's rhythm is all slow lanes and second cups of tea?

Stepping back out as the rain eased, I poked around the garden path. Chickens clucking in the neighbouring plot, the faint low of cattle from the marshes nearby, and that fresh, peaty air that hits different after London's fug. I fired up the barbecue (gas, thank god – no soggy charcoal faff today), grilled some sausages pinched from the Kings Lynn market on the way (best impulse buy ever), and settled in with a pint of Adnams. The sunset turned the sky all pink over the Hall's lake, and I couldn't stop grinning. Arrival chaos? What chaos? This Houghton hideaway had me hooked from the off – proper Norfolk magic, mishaps and all. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, but honestly, this first taste was spot on.
