About Norfolk
Stepping inside Houghton Premier was like slipping into a warm hug. The open-plan living space welcomed me with its wood-burning stove (already stocked with kindling, bless the hosts), squishy sofas piled high with cushions, and a kitchen that screamed "cook if you fancy, or don't". I dumped my bag and immediately brewed a cuppa, gazing out at the private garden enclosed by neat hedges. It backed onto open countryside – fields rolling out towards the River Great Ouse, just a gentle stroll away – but felt utterly secluded. No traffic hum, no neighbourly chit-chat; just birdsong and the occasional rustle of leaves. I plonked myself on the outdoor bench with my tea, feet up, and thought, "This is it. The joy of bugger all." First impressions? Cosy perfection. The lodge sleeps up to eight but I had it all to myself – selfish, I know, but after a mad year at work, I deserved this solo indulgence. The master bedroom upstairs was a dream: king-sized bed with fluffy white linens, en-suite shower that could steam away a month's stress, and French doors opening to a balcony overlooking that garden. I resisted the urge to nap immediately (only just) and instead wandered the grounds, picking a spot under the mature trees to crack open my book. Norfolk's magic is in these quiet pockets – no need for grand adventures when the world's slowed to the pace of a lazy bee. That evening, I lit the stove – flames crackling merrily as I heated up a ready meal (gourmet pie from the local Co-op in King's Lynn, naturally). Sat there with a glass of red, watching the sunset paint the sky pink over the fields, I had one of those gentle "what am I doing with my life?" moments. Chasing deadlines back home, when this – stillness, a good fire, the faint low of cattle in the distance – is what recharges the soul? I chuckled at myself, promising to remember this feeling when the real world beckons. Day two dawned misty, perfect for more of the same. Breakfast in the garden: toast, marmalade, and endless coffee, eavesdropping on the dawn chorus. A short amble down to the nearby Great Ouse riverbank – no more than a ten-minute plod through the village – revealed gravel paths winding along the water, herons staking their claim. I didn't hike far; just enough to feel the breeze, snap a few photos of reed beds swaying, then back for lounging. Afternoon blurred into reading on the sofa, dozing off mid-chapter, waking to brew more tea. Light humour in the mishaps: I tried "foraging" berries from the garden hedge, only to realise they were probably just fancy weeds. Laughed it off, munched an apple instead. By day three, I'd mastered the art of doing sod all. Puttered in the garden, spotting butterflies on the lavender, then retreated inside as light rain pattered the roof – bliss in a book nook with hot chocolate. Houghton Premier isn't about ticking boxes; it's a nudge to slow down, breathe Norfolk's fresh air, and rediscover the simple thrill of time stretching out. Leaving felt bittersweet, but I'll be back – cows or no cows on the way. |
