About Norfolk
I finally made it to Gold Lodge 4 in Old Hunstanton after what felt like the world's laziest road trip from Cambridge, nursing a flat tyre warning light that turned out to be nothing more than a dodgy sensor – typical me, panicking over pixels on the dashboard. It was a grey Friday afternoon in late spring, the sort of Norfolk day where the sky hangs low and promises rain but delivers only a teasing mist. We'd packed light: a couple of books, some tea bags, and zero agenda. After navigating the quiet lanes past the odd tractor, we pulled up to this gem of a lodge, tucked away in a peaceful holiday park just a stone's throw from the beach.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. The lodge sat there all snug and golden-hued, like a posh garden shed on steroids – detached, with that inviting wooden cladding that screams "cosy retreat." I fumbled the key code (second mishap of the day; blame the mist-fogged specs), and in we tumbled. The open-plan living space hit me like a warm hug: plush sofas piled with cushions, a wood-burning stove begging for a lazy evening fire (even if we didn't light it straight away), and a kitchen that was compact but kitted out with everything from a Nespresso machine to a proper oven. "This," I declared to my other half, "is where productivity goes to die." We dumped our bags and collapsed onto the sofa, staring out at the private decking and that lush communal garden stretching out behind. It was all neatly trimmed lawns, blooming shrubs, and those massive south-facing windows flooding the place with light. No traffic noise, no neighbours yakking – just the distant cry of a gull.

We'd come for three days of proper doing sod all, and arrival sealed the deal. No grand plans, just sinking into the joy of slowing right down. That first evening, I cracked open my battered copy of a Philip Pullman novel while brewing a mug of builder's tea. The garden view was mesmerising: birds flitting about, the odd rabbit hopping across the grass like it owned the place. My partner fiddled with the telly, settling on some rubbish daytime quiz show, and we laughed at how quickly we'd morphed into OAPs. "Fancy a walk?" I suggested half-heartedly. Nah, too much effort. Instead, we lounged, letting the world shrink to this perfect bubble.

Saturday dawned with that classic Norfolk breeze rattling the windows, but inside it was pure bliss. Breakfast was a faff-free affair – toast from the bread bin, fresh eggs from the fridge (they stock the basics, bless 'em). We spilled out onto the decking with coffees, feet up on the table, watching the garden come alive. It's got this sheltered feel, private enough for a guilt-free doze in the loungers, yet open to the park's shared green spaces where kids kicked a ball about in the distance. I spent hours there, book in lap, occasionally glancing up at the pines swaying gently. Light humour in the form of me attempting a sun salutation yoga pose, only to topple sideways into a flowerbed – "Namaste in bed next time," quipped my other half.

A leisurely potter down to Hunstanton beach was the sum total of our "exploration" – all of five minutes away on foot. The seafront was its usual quirky self: donkey rides plodding along the sand, the air thick with chips and candy floss. We ambled the prom, picked up a paper from the newsagent, and mooched back without breaking a sweat. No rushing to sights; just the simple thrill of salt on the breeze and space to breathe. Back at the lodge, it was more reading, a spot of lunch (homemade sarnies, naturally), and a cheeky nap on the super-king bed in the master suite. Those bedrooms are cracking – crisp sheets, en-suite with a rainfall shower that could've washed away a week's worth of city stress.

By Sunday, I'd hit that gentle epiphany moment, sprawled in the garden chair as the sun peeked through. Staring at the sky, I realised how knackered I'd been from life's constant hustle. Here, in this unassuming lodge, doing bugger all felt revolutionary. No emails pinging, no deadlines lurking – just the rustle of pages, the comfort of familiarity, and the sheer luxury of time stretching out. Gold Lodge 4 isn't flashy; it's proper, unpretentious Norfolk magic, the sort of place that whispers, "Stay put, love. You've earned it." Three days in, and I didn't want to leave.
