About Norfolk
Pulling up to Firefly just before lunch was pure magic. It's one of those dog-friendly lodges in a quiet park right on the edge of the forest, surrounded by pines that whisper in the breeze. The place is compact but spot-on for us – a wooden haven with a veranda that screams "relax here with a cuppa". We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the boys were off like shots, racing around the deck while I fumbled with the key code. First impressions? Blissfully unpretentious. No posh hotel vibes, just that warm hug of a proper Norfolk holiday let. Inside, it's all open-plan living: a squishy sofa facing a telly bigger than our living room one at home, a kitchenette stocked with basics (kettle on immediately, obviously), and a dining table begging for board games later. The bedrooms were a hit straight away – two doubles with crisp white sheets and those little touches like fluffy towels folded just so. Ours overlooked the trees, and I could already picture lazy mornings with birdsong instead of the usual alarm. The boys claimed the twin room, naturally turning it into a den of chaos within minutes: socks on the floor, crisps smuggled in from the car. "This is better than home!" the youngest declared, diving onto the bunk. I had a quiet chuckle, thinking how these simple spaces make kids light up more than any five-star resort. We cracked on with unpacking, but the real joy was that first potter around outside. The lodge backs straight onto woodland paths – proper Breckland stuff, all sandy soil and Scots pines that smell like Christmas. A quick five-minute stroll took us to a playground in the park, swings creaking gently in the wind, and the lads burned off the car energy while we parents flopped on a bench, sipping tea from travel mugs. Lunch was a no-fuss affair: bacon butties sizzling in the kitchen, eaten al fresco on the veranda as a light drizzle pattered down. That's Norfolk for you – weather that keeps you on your toes, but it just added to the hygge. As the afternoon unfolded, we wandered a bit further along the forest tracks, no more than a mile from the lodge, spotting deer prints and those cheeky squirrels that nick your nuts (figuratively speaking). Back at Firefly, chaos reigned in the best way: the hot tub was bubbling invitingly (a cheeky upgrade we hadn't banked on), but the boys turned it into a splash zone before we'd even dipped a toe. I slipped in first, beer in hand from the mini-fridge, and let out a proper "ahh" – muscles melting after the drive. Wife joined, and we watched the lads paddle like maniacs, giggling at their pirate impressions. Pure, unfiltered family daftness. Sitting there later, as the sun dipped low through the trees, I had one of those gentle moments of reflection. Life's mad rush back home – work emails, school runs – it all felt miles away in this pocket of Norfolk calm. Firefly isn't flashy; it's real, with its woodburner ready for cosier evenings and that lived-in feel that says "make yourself at home". We've only just arrived, but already it's reminding me why these short breaks matter: the mishaps, the mess, the simple thrill of being together without a schedule. Can't wait for day two. |
