About Norfolk
I finally made it to Drifters in Thornham after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd set off from London full of beans, dreaming of crisp Norfolk air and a cosy cottage escape, but somewhere near King's Lynn, my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly. It directed me down a narrow lane that petered out into a muddy farm track, complete with a flock of bemused sheep staring me down like I'd gatecrashed their picnic. Heart in mouth, I reversed out—splattering my hire car's hubcaps with enough Broadland clay to plant potatoes—before finding the right turn. Classic me, always turning a straightforward drive into an episode of Top Gear rejects.

By the time I pulled up outside Drifters, the sun was dipping low over the marshes, painting everything in that golden Norfolk glow. The cottage sits tucked away in a quiet spot just off the village green in Thornham, one of those picture-perfect flint-and-brick numbers that scream "proper countryside bolthole." I fumbled with the key safe, hands still trembling from the sheep incident, and stepped inside to a wave of warmth that hit me like a hug from an old mate. The living room was pure charm: low-beamed ceiling, a wood-burning stove already set with kindling (bless the hosts), and squishy sofas begging for a collapse. I dumped my bags and just stood there, grinning like an idiot at the Aga in the kitchen—shiny black, promising roast dinners without the faff.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant. I cracked open a window, and there it was: the flat, endless Norfolk skyline, with the faint cry of curlews drifting in from the salt marshes. Thornham's right on the edge of it all, minutes from those wild beaches at Holme-next-the-Sea or Titchwell, but Drifters feels worlds away from the hustle. I wandered out to the little patio, pint in hand (I'd packed a cheeky six-pack for emergencies), and watched the light fade over the fields. A pheasant strutted past like it owned the place, and I chuckled, thinking how I'd nearly missed this for a muddy ditch.

That evening, shaking off the arrival chaos, I pottered about settling in. The bedrooms upstairs were cracking—snug doubles with crisp white linen and views straight out to the horizon. Mine had this quirky old wardrobe that creaked like a pirate's ship, which had me half-expecting Blackbeard to pop out. Downstairs, I rustled up beans on toast on that magnificent Aga, the heat radiating just right, and sprawled by the fire with a book. No telly blaring, no neighbours thumping bass—just the tick of a clock and the wind whispering through the reeds. It was then, sipping my tea, that I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and Tube crushes; here, in this unassuming cottage, everything slowed. That daft sat-nav fiasco? It was the universe's way of saying, "Slow down, you numpty." And boy, did I listen.

Next morning—still buzzing from those first hits of magic—I stepped out for a proper mooch around Thornham. The village is tiny but ticks all the boxes: the Orange Tree pub just a stagger away, serving cracking local ales and fish suppers that'd make your nan jealous. I nipped down to the lifeboat station, peering at the sea crashing in, feeling that proper Norfolk wildness seep into my bones. Back at Drifters, I fired up the BBQ (hidden gem in the garden shed) and grilled some sausages pinched from the local butcher—none of your supermarket rubbish. Sat there as the sun climbed, I couldn't stop smiling at how this place wrapped you up like a favourite jumper.

Three days flew by in that bubble, but honestly, it was the arrival and those initial "wow" moments that hooked me deepest. The mishap made the welcome all the sweeter, turning potential stress into a story I'll dine out on. If you're after a proper reset without the pretension, Drifters is your spot—chaos optional.
