About Norfolk
I finally made it to Creake Pod in South Creake after a bit of a faff on the A149 – nothing major, just me taking a wrong turn near Fakenham because SatNav decided to have a mid-journey sulk and reroute me through some nameless farm track. Classic me, innit? But honestly, that little detour set the tone for the whole three days: stumbling upon Norfolk's proper hidden gems by sheer accident, the kind of off-the-beaten-track spots that make you glad you got lost.

Pulling up to the pod late afternoon on that first day, I was knackered from the drive but instantly charmed. Tucked away in a quiet corner of South Creake, it's this cosy, modern little hideaway – think sleek wood cladding blending into the rolling fields, with a private hot tub bubbling away like it was waiting just for me. The hosts had left fresh milk, biscuits, and a cheeky note saying "Make yourself at home, explorer!" which made me grin. First impressions? Pure bliss. No blaring traffic, just the distant low of cows and birdsong. I dumped my bags, cracked open a local Adnams beer from the fridge, and flopped onto the decking, watching the sun dip behind the hedges. Norfolk's big skies hit different here – vast and golden, making you feel properly small in the best way.

But the real magic kicked off when hunger struck and I fancied a wander rather than faffing with cooking. No grand plans, just following my nose down a leafy lane I hadn't clocked on the map. Ended up in the heart of South Creake village, where I tripped over The Creake Abbey Café by pure fluke. Tucked behind the ruins of the old abbey – these crumbling 13th-century stones half-swallowed by ivy – it's a total secret spot. No tourist crowds, just locals nursing flat whites and massive slices of flapjack. I grabbed a ploughman's with proper Norfolk cheese, crumbly and sharp, and chatted with the owner about the abbey's history. She'd point out hidden carvings in the walls that you'd miss if you weren't faffing about like me. Sat there as the light faded, feeling like I'd gatecrashed someone's private Eden. Bloody marvellous.

Next morning, still buzzing from that find, I laced up my boots for a "quick" explore, aiming for nowhere in particular. Veered off the main path past the pod and accidentally discovered a footpath snaking through ancient hedgerows – the sort that scream "Norfolk blackberry heaven" come autumn, but even now, in early summer, it was bursting with wildflowers. Led me to a forgotten dew pond, this tiny mirror of water ringed by rushes, alive with dragonflies darting about. No signs, no maps; just me, a heron eyeing me suspiciously, and the hum of bees. I plonked down with a thermos of tea from the pod's fancy machine, reflecting on how I never slow down like this at home. Work's always nipping at my heels, but here, getting lost forced a proper pause. Made me realise I've been missing out on these quiet epiphanies amid the rush.

That first evening, another serendipitous detour down a unmarked track near Burnham Market – only a couple of miles hop – unearthed a wildflower meadow bursting with ox-eye daisies and poppies, swaying like they'd been choreographed. Parked up (well, pulled over on the verge), I wandered in, phone forgotten, just breathing it all in. Back at the pod, hot tub under the stars, I toasted to accidental adventures. Creake Pod isn't just a stay; it's a launchpad for Norfolk's whispered wonders. Three days in, and I'd barely scratched the surface, but those first impressions? They'll linger like the best kind of dream. If you're after proper escapism, get yourself lost here.
