About Norfolk
Pulling up to Clavering Lodge late afternoon, I was knackered but buzzing. The place is a gem – a traditional flint cottage tucked in a quiet spot just outside Downham Market, with a garden that screams lazy afternoons and a wood-burner begging for a fire. I’d barely unloaded my bags when old Bert from next door popped over, leaning on his fence like he’d been waiting for me. Must be in his seventies, with a face like a weathered walnut and a flat cap that looked glued on. “New ’ere, are ya?” he grinned, eyeing my mud-caked wheels. I confessed to the farm track fiasco, and he roared with laughter. “That’s nowt! Last week I got stuck in old Farmer Giles’ field – tractor had to winch me out. Welcome to Norfolk, lad!” We chatted for ages about his prize marrow from the village show – apparently it won best in class, beating young ’uns half his age. Bert’s the sort who’d chat the hind leg off a donkey, but in the best way; his tales of Downham’s flood of ’55 had me in stitches, proper local lore. Next morning, I wandered into Downham Market for supplies – it’s only a hop away, all Georgian charm and bustling little shops. First character I clocked was Maureen behind the counter at the butcher’s on the high street. Stout as a barrel, with hair like steel wool and an apron stained from years of sausage-making, she sized me up sharpish. “Cottage stayin’, eh? Clavering Lodge? You’re the third this month – must be the Netflix effect or summat.” I chuckled, asking for some local bacon, and she launched into a monologue about her late husband’s failed attempt at keeping pigs. “Thought he’d be the next Alan Titchmarsh, he did. Ended up with ’em eatin’ his veg plot!” Her cackle echoed round the shop, drawing nods from regulars. By the time I left, arms full of her homemade black pudding (which she insisted was “the dog’s bollocks”), I felt like I’d known her forever. Norfolk folk don’t do small talk; it’s straight into the good stuff. Back at the lodge that evening, as I fired up the barbecue in the garden, who should appear but the postman, Derek – or so his badge said. Early fifties, bike propped against the gate, with a moustache that could hide a family of mice. He’d “just popped by” with a misdelivered parcel (mine, funnily enough) and stayed for a sausage. Turned out he’s Downham born and bred, knows every inch within five miles. “Seen ghosts at Clavering, have ya?” he winked, spinning a yarn about a spectral monk from the old priory ruins nearby – total codswallop, but delivered with such relish I half-believed it. We swapped stories till dusk; his about the time the village fete’s beer tent collapsed in a gale had me howling. That first full day wrapped with me sat on the lodge patio, pint in hand, reflecting gently on how these chance chats cut through the holiday gloss. In the rush of city life, you forget how a natter with strangers can recharge the soul – no agendas, just proper human warmth. Bert, Maureen, Derek: they turned arrival into belonging, making Clavering Lodge feel less like a rental and more like home turf. Can’t wait to go back and hear what mischief they’ve been up to next. |
