About Norfolk
I’ll never forget the drive to Bluebell Cottage in Thornham – a proper Norfolk adventure that started with me faffing about in the SatNav like a right numpty. We’d set off from King’s Lynn early-ish, aiming for that quintessential three-day escape in the west Norfolk countryside, but halfway there, my ancient TomTom decided to throw a wobbly. “Recalculating,” it chirped endlessly as I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that looked more like a farm track than a road. Bumper-to-bumper with a tractor hauling silage, I was sweating bullets, convinced we’d end up in a field of beetroots. The missus just laughed, munching on a Greggs pasty, while I muttered about Norfolk’s “bloody mazes of hedges.” Classic me – overpacking the car with wellies, binoculars, and enough tea bags to last a siege, only to cock up the simplest journey.

By the time we rolled into Thornham, proper frazzled, the sun was dipping low over the marshes, painting everything in that golden light you only get out here. Bluebell Cottage (4) sits tucked away in a quiet nook off the village green, one of those chocolate-boxy spots that screams “holiday bliss.” We parked up on the gravel drive – crunching tyres announcing our arrival like we were royalty – and there it was: a cosy stone-built gem with a thatched roof nodding to olde England, surrounded by wildflower borders buzzing with bees. The chaos of the drive melted away the second I stepped out and breathed in that salty, peaty air from the nearby coast. Thornham’s just a hop from Holme beach, you see, and you can practically taste the North Sea.

Fumbling with the key safe (another minor panic when my numb fingers wouldn’t cooperate), we tumbled inside, bags banging against the low-beamed doorway. Blimey, what a first impression! The living room hit me like a warm hug – flagstone floors, a wood-burner begging for a log or two, and squishy sofas draped in quilts that screamed “put your feet up.” I plonked down, finally exhaling, while the missus pottered to the kitchen. It’s proper homely, that galley-style setup with a Rayburn cooker gleaming like it was polished that morning, and a window overlooking the garden where bluebells (obviously) sway in the breeze. We cracked open a bottle of Norfolk cider – grabbed from the village shop on the way – and toasted our survival. “To not ending up in a ditch,” I quipped, clinking glasses.

Upstairs, the bedrooms were a dream: our king-sized one with a view straight out to the rolling fields, crisp white linens and a jug of fresh milk on the side like Nan used to do. The en-suite’s compact but spotless, with fluffy towels that made me feel posh. The kids’ room (well, hypothetical ones – we brought the dog instead) had those cute twin beds perfect for little’uns, all snug under the eaves. I had a moment there, staring out the window at the twilight sky, reflecting on how daft it is rushing through life back home. Here, in this pint-sized paradise, time slows right down – no emails, no deadlines, just the distant cry of a curlew from the saltmarshes.

We ventured out for a quick evening stroll around Thornham’s green – past the 17th-century church and the dog-friendly pub where locals sup pints of Adnams. Back at the cottage, supper was simple: local crab from the fisherfolk down at Old Hunstanton (a quick five-minute drive), scoffed at the oak table with the radio humming folk tunes. The chaos of arrival? Forgotten. Bluebell Cottage wrapped us in its charm from minute one – quirky beams that make you duck (lesson learned), peace that soothes the soul, and that indefinable Norfolk magic. If you’re after a bolthole that feels like slipping into a gentler world, this is it. Can’t wait to return, minus the SatNav shenanigans.
